Show Cardiac Life Support Class Offered Here An advanced cardiac life support course for health care workers will be offered on Friday and Saturday, May 10 and 11 at the Senior Citizens Center downstairs in the courthouse in Panguitch. Previous certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is required and the course is open to all physicians and nurses. Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) may audit the course and are encouraged to do so although, currenty, only doctors and nurses may be certified in the special course. The 15-hour course takes up where the standard CPR courses leave off according to Paul Arnstein, director of nursing at Garfield Memorial Hospital. Special training will be offered In advanced emergency techniques, starting IV s, intubation (tubes in the airway), defibrillation, and recognizing electrocardiogram disturbances. A practice session on Saturday will permit each participant to diagnose a mock life-threatening situation and direct others in the class In proper procedures to employ. Interested individuals may obtain pre-tests and books at Garfield Memorial Hospital from Arnstein or from Honor Arnestin, director of education at the facility. Participants are encouraged to study through the 150-page manual prior to the course. Cost of the course is $45 for those planning to certify and $10 for those planning to audit. Auditing the course should prove helpful, Arnstein said, for EMTs who will sometime in the future be offered an opportunity to participate in a defibrillation course for EMTs. |
