'jj Crews Contain 1260 Acre' Forest Fire Near Junction JUNCTION-Flre crews frora three national forests Wong with smoke-Jumpers from McCall, Ida. were completing mop-up operations on the Forshea Mountain east of Piute Reservoir Wednesday, after containing a fire which destroyed 1260 acres of brush and timber. The fire, which was apparently lightning caused, was reported about 2 p.m. Monday nd within two hours had spread over 400 acres. It then moved from sagebrush into stands of fir and aspen and moved from a canyon on the west of the mountain, in the Hell Hole area, to the east side of the range Into Rock Canyon. By 6 p.m. Monday, the fire had spread to an estimated 600 acres and by nightfall, to 1200 acres. All available men from Ftshlake National Forest were sent to the scene, along with 40 from Dixie National Forest and 30 from Mantl-LaSal National Forest. A smoke Jumper crew was flown in from Vernal where they had been battling a glaze, but due to high winds, were forced to land at Richfield and travel by car to the scene. Six retardent drops by plane were made over the fire, using a B-26 and B-17. The planes were sent from Cedar City and Salt Lake City. Matt Pace, fire dispatcher at the forest headquarters In Richfield, said the area is mostly brush and is not considered a critical watershed area. He said a dozer has been on the scene working with the crews since the fire was first discovered. Floyd Bartlett, Beaver District Ranger, is fire boss. All crews have remained at the scene throughout the fire and it was expected they would begin demobilization late Wednesday. Some fire was still reported Wednesday morning, but It was considered under control as of late Tuesday night. Pace said the Piute County fire is the 50th reported In Ftshlake National Forest areas this season, with a total of 1,500 acres burned, lnduding the 1260 In the current blaze. |
