Show Sariah C, Alvey Will Celebrate it5th Birthday ESCALANTE - Sariah Christina Haws Alvey will celebrate her 86th birthday anniversary April 25 with family and friends. She was born April 25, 1890 at Thurber (now Bicknell), a daughter of John Franklin Haws and Minnie Smith Haws. When she was six years old the family moved from Wayne County to Boulder where she attended school in a one room log building with home made benches. During the summer the family moved on the mountain to milk cows and make butter and cheese which was freighted out and traded for cloth and food. She came to Escalante during the winter of 1907-8 where she met Samuel James Alvey. They were married March 12, 1908, in Boulder by Elder C.A. Hansen in a church ceremony. The marriage was later solemnized in the Manti LDS Temple. They lived in a two room adobe house in Escalante where they set up housekeeping and their 10 children were born and raised. She sewed for the family, raised a garden, worked in the church and civic organizations. She has made hundreds of quilts, doiles and other hand work. Most of her acquaintances have received Mrs. Sariah Alvey, Escalante's oldest resident, keeps busy with handiwork, as can be seen in this display. She will note her 85th birthday. one or more of her doilies and dish bags, She can out work, out walk and out talk people who have lived only half as long as she has. Mr. Alvey died Dec. 30, 1974, at the age of 86 and she lives in her two story house alone surrounded by her pictures and trinkets. Most of the town citizens have been recipients of her cake, fresh baked bread and other goodies. Five of her children are living, three of them in Escalante. She has 23 grandchildren, 39 greatgrandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. |
