Show Postponement Asked In Park Concession Close U.S. Senator Jake Gam R-Utah) is asking the U.S. Park Service to postpone for one year proposed closing of concessions at Zion National Park in southern Utah. Garn says the concessions are due to be closed on Dec. 31, 1975 and present plans call for a study of the closing to be made between the end of the 1975 tourist season and the proposed closing date. He was told that the Park Service plans to held public meetings in several southern Utah towns before the concession pull out if affected In a letter to the superin-tendant of the U.S. Park Ser-vice, Sen. Garn said "Three or four months is not nearly enough time to conduct a study that would produce any acceptable result. If the concessions are to be withdrawn at the end of the year, preparation for the closing of the facilities will have to begin well before that date. Should the decision be to allow the concessions to continue, upgrading an refurbishing will be necessary. "I would therefore strongly urge that the study go forward as presently planned, but that the proposed closing date for the Zion Park facilities be postponed for one year, until Jan. 1, 1977. At the same time, I would urge the Park Service to begin Immediate planning for a restudy of the closing of Bryce Canyon concessions, scheduled for 1977, so that we aren't faced with a similar situation a year from now." |
