Show Kaiparowits Project Studied By State Officials at Tropic J TROPIC Problems and 9 projects involving the f Kaiparowits Power Project $ were discussed and explained by officials of the Utah State I Road Commission and the state 1 planning coordinator during a I public meeting Thursday in I Tropic. j At the meeting, which was organized by Cannonville Town President Laurie Holley, Sam i Taylor, Moab, chairman of the State Road Commission, along with Clem Church, Panguitch, commission member, Bert I Carleson, State Planning Coordinator, and Sen. Dixie Leavitt, (R-Cedar City) addressed the meet. j Mr. Taylor explained that the ;f commission is faced with a money shortage and for the first 1 time, money had to be taken out $ of the state's general fund and (i placed in the road fund to take S. care of critical construction needs. 5 He said that in his hometown j of Moab, the same problems facing Garfield and Kane counties had been met that of an influx of people and a tax valuation hike. I Taylor said that industry I which moved into Moab in the i past 20 years has allowed many former residents to return because they now have an industry in which they can be employed. "I believe in industrial development, but not to the point of ruining all our natural j; resources," Taylor said. I "Remember, it's our land, our I water, our coal, our smoke and our plant. We must remember v that all these things will make t jobs and increase industry, but we must also insist on a high quality of life through careful planning and use of technology in construction of these industries." " Taylor also said the desires of. the people in the areas where these Industries are proposed should be made know, " even if we have to contact the Secretary of the Interior." "The companies building Kaiparowits are not going to ; lose money. If it costs more to build the plant at Four Mile Bench, the company will have to pay the difference through the higher prices they charge their customers, so we should 1 demand what we want in the way of locations," Taylor said. I Mr. Carleson reviewed the proposals concerning J Kaiparowits. He said con-j struction at its height will be J nearly 5,000 persons, which f would result in a town of some 15,000. "This will be a per-J manent town, not just a con-t struction town," he em-, phasized. j He said East Clark Bench 1 near Glen Canyon City and 1 Four Mile Bench to the north J are the two townsites being 4 considered the most strongly. He also said that training of workers for mining is being considered both by the company at the townsite and at College of Eastern Utah in Price. Sen. Leavitt reviewed his energy proposals which were passed in the Utah Legislature, which will allow the developing companies to build roads into the areas, and have their tax monies pay for them as the Utah State Road Commission Chairman Sam Taylor, Moab, left and Commissioner Clem Church, Panguitch, check possible town and project progresses Efforts to continue working toward a northern site for the proposed townsite were brought up throughout the meeting by speakers and persons attending. plant sites on map during Cannonville meeting concerning Kaiparowits Project.
