Show Sentinel Guardian of Your Community News WEDNESDAY, MARCH 31, 2010 • A7 Letters to the Editor What Matters Most Wonderful Service "Words do two major things: They provide food for the mind and create light for understanding and awareness.1' John Rohn. That is what the "The Sentinel," previously "The Spanish Fork News," (and originally "The Spanish Fork Press") has done for many of us for a lifetime. I was saddened to read last Wednesday that "The Sentinel" is closing its doors. Ironically, this is happening after receiving "The Best of State" award in most of the categories for smalltown newspapers. This small-town paper has provided a service equal to none in our state. As a life-long resident of Spanish Fork, both of my parents, B. Davis and Virginia Evans, wrote for this newspaper. My father wrote a weekly "Round the Town" column and my mom wrote a column entitled "Flowers for the highlighting; Living," people in our community. JC Henderson, the owner at the time, encouraged that type of writing to enlighten, bind, and make us aware of the great, everyday people by whom we were surrounded. Lane Henderson has continued that wonderful service for many years. When he was called as a Mission President to MiIan Italy, the Daily Herald took over the Spanish Fork Press name and its circulation. After Lane's mission, he resumed his father's legacy with "The Spanish Fork News." Steve Hardman became editor at that time and became an integral part of our community. "The News" became "The Sentinel" last summer to be able to incorporate the communities of the four high schools in our area. With the support of businesses, and under the expertise of another editor, Namon Bills, our youth in the area have never had so much positive exposure. Front-page layouts and photo spreads have been works of art. It would be a great addition to our city to frame and hang some of those spreads in the City Hall as a history of our happenings. An institution that has fed our minds and enlightened our understanding of the greatness among us is closing its doors. I personally want to thank them for providing the paper and ink that has bound our community together for decades. With great appreciation, Patricia Evans Frandsen Spanish Fork It saddens me to hear that such a great newspaper and part of our community is coming to a close. The Spanish Fork News/Sentinel was an excellent asset to the communities of Spanish Fork, Salem, Woodland Hills, Mapleton and the others in the area as well, providing great services to the community and contributing to the quality of excellence that is shown throughout these cities. Each edition was always something worth reading, filled with stories that were relevant to the community and enjoyable as well. Every photo and article was top quality, providing a community newspaper that was truly great. I can always count on the Sentinel to have great school coverage, truly covering what matters most, as their slogan says. I will never forget such a great newspaper and service to the community. Thank you so much. James Hardman MMHS Community Showcase Above and Beyond Cage Fighting I read with sadness the news that your paper will no longer be a part of our community. I can hardly imagine not having it be a regular part of our lives every Wednesday. Thank you for all you have done over the years to showcase the community. Thank you for always supporting my own personal interests, i.e. America's Junior Miss, Foothills Elementary, weddings announcements, etc. You have documented so much of what is important in our lives! You truly have achieved excellence and will be sorely missed, oh, so missed! Thanks, thanks and thanks again! Jan Gordon Salem Once again The Sentinel has gone above and beyond civic duty by publicizing Spanish Fork Youth Theatre's production of "The Wizard Of Oz." Everyone involved with this fun play appreciates the publicity The Sentinel provided. It's so exciting for the young actors to see their pictures in the paper! The Youth Theatre staff is grateful for the support they have received over the years from our local paper, and are saddened by the news that this is the last edition. Thank you so much for all you've done for the arts in Spanish Fork. Good luck to all your staff in future endeavors. Sincerely, Spanish Fork Youth Theatre Cast and Crew I am a student at Omega Martial Arts in Payson and I have some feelings about the Salem cage fighting. I don't think it is a very good idea to have ultimate fighting. In Omega Martial Arts, we learn about respect and self defense. We don't learn to attack people whenever we want. In ultimate fighting, it will teach violence for entertainment. I don't like the idea of it. It is different from protecting yourself from fighting each other for entertainment. We shouldn't teach little kids about violence. Thank you for your time. Sincerely. Isaac Lee Salem Need somebody who specializes in smiles? jyv^/^ji_i Talk to the Doc! $ 14. 1533 N.
