Spanish Fork resident's photo wins big at competition Christy Hardman STAFF WRITER Wayne Shelton P.T. of Spanish Fork recently won the People's Choice award at the Wild Sheep Convention in Reno, Nev. for his photograph of a big horn sheep perched on the rocks in front of Native American petroglyphs. "Of all the pictures there, the people liked mine the best. It had nothing to do with the judges," Shelton said. 'The award was entirely based on what the people liked." There were a lot of peo- ple involved in that vote, between 4-5,000 in attendance at the Wild Sheep Convention, according to Shelton. Shelton is a hunter and an amateur photographer who, as he said, "likes to play the game" of finding rare scenes to shoot with a lens. "I go to document the hunt," he said. "When 1 go hunting, the camera goes too, and I'm always looking for those opportunities as they present themselves." Though a photographer at heart, Shelton said if he saw a trophy buck and had Wayne Shelton a license, he would take the animal down with a bullet, and then take the photo. He has won two other photo contests with this method, first and third place with hunter and trophy photographs. When he took the awardwinning photo of the big horn sheep at Green River, Shelton did not have a permit. He was accompanying a friend in the hunt, and his friend tried to kill the animal in the photo, but missed. Shelton said his friend took off after the sheep, moving in closer to get a good shot at the big horn, while ShelSee PHOTO • A10 Miss Springville/Mapleton TO WEAR THE CROWN: On Saturday, March 20, 2010 a new Miss Springville/ Mapleton was crowned — Sarah Benson of Mapleton. But a quick chat with Mayor G. Wayne Andersen clears things up, or at least confirms why there has been some chatter. When asked about the possibility of a Costco coming to North Main Street here in town. Mayor Andersen could neither confirm nor deny. There has been some speculation that Costco could take the old RR Donelly building and retrofit it for a retail location. Others speculators suggest that there is plenty of land available on North Main Street in empty lots and fields. Mayor Andersen said he's not at liberty to discuss the bulk store's plans nor the suggested locations. All this seems familiar since similar statements were made when the city went under contract with Target, leading several citizens to believe the store is well on its way to making Spanish Fork home. As for lengthening the airport's runway. Mayor Andersen said that Spanish Fork City, along with Springville City, have to come to an agreement because each city is responsible for five percent of the total cost for the extension. The Federal Airline Administration, or FAA, wants the runway to be longer so that larger planes can utilize the airport. The FAA would ideally like to see expansion of the airport. Several months ago, city staffers and officials took a trip to Ogden to see their airport, and some of the growth Ogden has seen from expanding their runway .The hope is that by lengthening the runway, Spanish Fork City and Springville City will be able to see substantial growth in their business sectors as a direct result. -: In the past few weeks Utah's state lawmakers passed several bills. One of the few pertaining directly to Spanish Fork was House Bill 5, which "authorizes the sale, lease, or disposal of certain state real property and certain interest in real property." The part pertaining to Spanish Fork is Part 4, under lease-purchase authorizations, and states: "The Legislature intends that the courts may use existing funds to enter into a lease-purchase agreement for the Spanish Fork Courthouse at no additional cost to the state." Mayor Andersen said he knew about the possibility of purchase or expansion at the end of the current lease, but was unaware of the details pertaining to this particular bill. The bill had no further clarification on this particular issue. Mayor Andersen wanted to let the public know that he has an open-door policy in effect. He will be available to meet with anyone from the community from 4-5:30 p.m. on the Tuesdays when city council meets. This is usually on the first and third Tuesdays of the month, but some meetings may change. Meetings are always posted on the city website. Citizens can also email the mayor with concerns or questions and can also call and schedule appointments at other tunes. |
