Indians in Early Liberty Indians had long summered in Ogden Valley before white settlers came; they would camp along the rivers, fish, hunt, and gather berries that grew in abundance, adding to their supply of dried meat. Indian Chief “Little Soldier” loved this valley, making it his camping grounds in the summer when Indians used to come in bands of 30 or 40, with their packs and ponies. In about 1886, there was an Indian wedding. Indians came to the houses to beg for food, bread being their favorite. Sometimes they took nearly everything the settlers had in the house. They dared not refuse them. There were only a few neighbors in the area. Some were as much as five miles apart, but they were glad for every one of them when the Indians came. Many times, the children, in their great fear of the Indians, hid in the potato hole under the house, or under the hay in the barn. They stayed hidden nearly all day if the Indians chose to camp nearby. An old Indian trail can still be seen west of Thomas Shupe’s house.
