Boys & Girls Ages 8 - 17 years old Call Madeline or Marv Evans 745-3415 Quilts to Go on Display at the Ogden Valley Library The “Piece of Mind” quilt guild— the Valley’s very own quilt guild—will be displaying their handmade mini quilts at the Ogden Valley Branch library May 14 through June 13. The Valley guild was organized in August of 2000, with a few friends coming together. Today the group boasts 56 members. The Valley Guild is a chapter of the Utah Quilt Guild. The group meets at the library each month to learn new techniques, share ideas, create items for service projects, and to participate in quilting workshops. Blood Drive Scheduled in Huntsville By Cynthia Beck, Blood Drive Coordinator The St. Florence Catholic Church in Huntsville is once again sponsoring a community blood drive. Mark your calendar for Tuesday, May 28 from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. The blood drive will be held at the church located at 6461 E. Highway 39. If you donated in November . . . great! Please come again and bring a friend, neighbor or another family member. Better yet—bring all of the above! There will be lots of homemade goodies to eat to help perk you up after your blood donation. Also, on Sunday, May 26, there will be a Patriotic Rally on the front lawn of St. Florence’s at 10:00 a.m. This event is non-denominational, so everyone please come, and bring your flags. For More Information, contact the Ogden Symphony Ballet Association at (801) 399-9214 or melissa@symphonyballet.org Eccles Community Art Center to Display Watercolors by Zolotsev The Eccles Community Art Center in Ogden will be displaying works from the Pastel Society of Utah’s Fifth Annual Statewide Open Show in the Main Gallery during May. The Carriage House Gallery will feature the watercolors of Yevgeniy Zolotsev. Organized in 1998, the Pastel Society of Utah is dedicated to furthering the education of interested artists and the general public about the versatility, quality, and beauty of the pastel medium in the producing of fine works of art. The Pastel Society of Utah is a member of the International Association of Pastel Societies. Being a part of this association provides the society with greater opportunities to learn, exhibit works, and be better aware of what is available for pastel artists from, literally, around the world. Anyone interested in learning more about the Pastel Society of Utah should contact President Nor Del Murdock at 801-9658114. The name “pastel” comes from the French word pastiche (paste) since pure, powdered pigment is ground into a paste with a small amount of gum binder and then rolled into sticks. The pigments in pastels are the same as in oils or watercolors, the difference being pastels are a dry medium. Artwork is created by striking the pastel sticks across an abrasive ground, embedding the color in the “tooth” of the paper, or other surface. Many great artists have used pastels as a principal medium. They include Edgar Degas, Mary Cassatt, Delecroix, Manet, Renoir and Toulouse-Lautrec to name a few. In the past ten years, there has been a resurgence of interest in the medium. The judge for the Fifth Annual Statewide Open Show will be Larry Douglass, Director of the Brigham City Museum. He will award Best of Show, First Place, Second Place, Third Place and Awards of Merit that will be announced at the opening reception. Yevgeniy Zolotsev was born in Tambov City, Russia in 1969, into a family of artists. His father and two brothers are artists. Encouraged and guided by his family, he studied art at the Tambov Art College, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1990. He became a member of the prestigious Union of Free Artists in St. Petersberg in 1989. His works were exhibited in galleries in St. Petersberg and later in Germany until his immigration to the United States in 1992. His works may be found in collections in Finland, Germany, Russia, and more recently the United States. Yevgeniy specializes in watercolor. Over the years he has developed a unique wet-on-wet style of painting. Please join us at an opening reception for these exhibits on Friday, May 10 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. The public is invited. The exhibits will remain on display through June 1. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Saturdays 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. closed Sundays and major holidays.
