HISTORIC BACKGROUND The building which now stands on the corner of 3500 E. 4100 N., is really made up of TWO historic church buildings. The first church, originally costing $4,000, was built in 1904. It was made from brick from the brick kiln just north and east of the church, and consisted of one room and a stage, with a basement beneath for coal storage. A fine hardwood floor was installed (one of the first in Weber County). People came from far and near to dance on it. Yes, it is still there. Its dancing days are not yet over. In 1952 (50 years ago), work began on the new chapel, an $80,000 edifice. There was discussion about tearing down the old chapel, but fortunately, it was incorporated into the new building and became the gym and overflow area for the chapel. On December 27th, 1953, the new red church was dedicated by L.D.S. church President David O. McKay, beloved son of Huntsville. This beautiful chapel served the needs of the Liberty Ward until April 1976. Then ward members moved into the new white church they would share with the Eden Ward on 2900 N. Highway 162. The Historic Red Church and the 1904 original church, which it included, was sold to a private family and used as a summer home. In January 2002, the Historic Red Church went on the real estate market. The Community plans to buy and restore it for use as a Community Center. You are all invited to be a part of reclaiming Valley History. |
