Show Volume VI, Issue III THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 3 May 15, 2002 MONAHAN cont. from page 1 Intermountain Region. She held positions as acting Deputy Forest Supervisor for the National Forests and Grasslands of Texas, and acting Regional Director for Recreation, Wilderness and, Heritage for the Intermountain Region. Most recently, Monahan has been the Ogden District Ranger on the Wasatch-Cache National Forest in Utah. Monahan holds a Bachelors of Science degree in Forest Management from Washington State University. Monahan replaces Bill LaVere who transferred to the Intermountain Regional Office in Ogden, Utah where he serves as the Director of Biological and Physical Resources for the Region. Laurie Tippin, from the national office in Washington D.C., has served as acting Forest Supervisor since January. Monahan and her family will report to Twin Falls, Idaho on June 3, 2002. Monahan has lived in Eden for the past nine and a half years, contributing much to the community through her service on the Eden Park Board and through her contributions to the Ogden Valley Trails Mast Plan. Monahan states that while living in the Valley, she has tried to be sensitive to local issue, balancing them with her position as District Ranger. “I have also tried to be sensitive to the importance of recreation, and the impact it has on private land owners. The Forest Service tries to be a good neighbor. On newly proposed projects, we try to listen to local feedback—both positive and negative.” Complementing the great staff she says she has been fortunate to have worked with while serving as Ogden District Ranger for the WasatchCache National Forest, Monahan states she feels fortunate to have accomplished some things that are important to the Valley, such as the Pineview West Trail, the Pioneer and Wheeler Trails, and the grooming of the cross country trail at Anderson Cove. She also noted the effort by the Forest Service to create a safer environment at Pineview by lowering the number of boats allowed on the reservoir. “Working on the Snowbasin project was also a great experience. The Snowbasin project has served as a great example of different agencies coming together, along with special interest groups, to ensure a successful outcome. I feel extremely fortunate to have been a part of the Olympics and Paralympics.” Monahan also noted the satisfaction she gained from working on some of the more personal projects, such as the John Paul and Art Nord Monuments near Snowbasin. “It was very rewarding to learn about the stories behind these great people, and the contributions they made.” Monahan concluded, “I hope the community will continue to be involved. Too often folks can take for granted the beautiful scenery around us, and the breathtaking backdrop to where we live and work each day. My Ruth Monahan husband Mike and I will miss living in the Valley.” Benefiting from the many contributions she made to our community— large and small—Ogden Valley residents will surely miss Ruth Monahan and the service she rendered. We join together in wishing you the best of luck in your new assignment, and last of all, we join together to say , thank you . . . WMNSF Launches “TIP-A-COP” at Utah’s Largest Police Fair The Weber-Morgan Narcotics Strike Force (WMNSF) recently launched a new marketing campaign at the annual Weber/Morgan County Law Enforcement Fair—the largest law enforcement fair in Utah—that was held May 11 at the Dee Events Center in Ogden. The program, dubbed “Tipa-Cop,” has been developed to increase awareness and detection of illegal drug activity in neighborhoods throughout Weber and Morgan counties. Residents of these counties can call a toll-free number (1-866-TIP-A-COP) to anonymously report suspicious activity in their communities. Of specific concern to the Strike Force are methamphetamine or “meth” labs, which have proliferated in residential areas in recent years. Lieutenant Mike Ashment, Commander of the Weber Morgan Narcotic Strike Force, stated, “We’re excited to offer this program to the citizens of Weber and Morgan counties. The residents of these communities are truly the first line of defense against the sale, use, and manufacture of illegal drugs—which is why we’ve adopted as our slogan: ‘It’s Your Neighborhood.’” The Tip-a-Cop campaign had an official kick-off with a press conference conducted by Weber County Attorney Mark DeCaria on May 11 as part of the annual Law Enforcement Fair. The fair featured live police and medical demonstrations from: SWAT; Search & Rescue divers and climbers; D.A.R.E antique cars; Medivac rescue helicopters; Utah Highway Patrol B.A.T Mobile and seatbelt simulators; K-9 attack suits; Safe Kids games; Ogden Clinic Healthcare Physicians for healthcare questions, massage therapy, blood-pressure & sugar checks, and vision and hearing screening; and Natural Health & Spine spinal exams and diet & nutrition counseling. A memorial service was held at noon to commemorate every police officer who had lost their life in the line of duty. Lieutenant Ashment concluded, “Now is the time as citizens, neighbors, and family members to take an active role in creating a healthy, safe, and drugfree community for our children.” Scouts Looking for Motor Boat The Trapper Trails Council of the Boy Scouts of America is looking for a motor boat to be donated for use at one of the seven summer camps it operates each year.
