Ogden Valley News A record number of teachers will be leaving Valley Elementary at the end of the school year, ready to enjoy a well deserved retirement—Carol Pilcher, Pat Fuller, Dave Garner, Cary Davis, and Monty Hawks. Jane McVaugh retired earlier in the year. Pat Fuller Carol Pilcher Carol Pilcher is retiring after teaching school for 28 years, 19 of those at Valley. Pilcher has the distinction of also being a student at Valley during elementary and junior high, having grown up in Liberty as a child. Pilcher states, “I’m proud to have been a part of the special needs preschool program at Valley. This has been a real asset to our community. Barbara Jordan and I started with two children in the program, 14 years ago. “One memorable experience at Valley was when one of my kindergarten students brought a snake for “show and tell.” The container had a tiny hole in the top for air. When we came back in to our room after attending a program, the snake was missing. We searched everywhere. It was never found. I worried every day that it would slither up under my chair while I was reading a story. “The kids and parents have been great. I shall miss the associations of all those at Valley; I hope I will be remembered as someone who loved children, and helped them to be excited about starting their journey into learning.” Pat Fuller has taught school for 36 years, teaching Kindergarten at Valley for 30 years. For Fuller, the highlight of teaching has been, “To watch the magic turn on with children when they learn to read.” Fuller is the recipient of the KSL Teacher Feature Award, numerous Apple Awards, and the, I Love Teaching Award. “Miss Pat” has been called a “milk and cookies” teacher, who demonstrates warmth yet firmness, teaching in a non-threatening atmosphere. Monty Hawks Cary Davis only missing one day of school. My accident totally changed my life. I love the faculty at Valley. They have become my family. It will be very hard for me to separate myself from them. “Once someone called me the ‘Shakespeare Lady.’ That was a compliment. The plays and programs are Dave Garner Dave Garner has taught school for 28 years in the fourth through sixth grades. Twenty-five of those years have been spent at Valley. Garner has received the, I Love Teaching Award. Recently he was the recipient of a grant from Toyota, pro- Subscriptions available for out of area residents at $18.00 annually. She has received the Apple Award from the Ogden Standard-Examiner several times, and the, I Love Teaching Award from the District office. When asked about a highlight while teaching, she stated, “Someone sent me a letter and said they remembered all the Utah Counties for a 7th grade Utah History test because of the song they learned in my class—Utah Train. Wow! “The years at Valley have been wonderful. I planned to die on a Friday, and be buried on a Tuesday, Celebrating 30 years of listing and selling homes. Thank you for your support & my success! ADJACENT TO VALLEY MARKET highlights for me because they bring out the best in children—a chance to really shine in the spotlight. Every child deserves that experience. “Every time someone says, ‘Bet you don’t remember me,’ it’s someone who has grown into this wonderful person. I love the children of the Valley, they are a special and rare breed. I shall miss them.” Monty Hawks, who has taught school for the past 30 years, 19 at Valley, states, “Thanks to all the parents, students, and staff at Valley for making it hard to leave. You are the best!” A retirement Open House for Valley teachers will be held at the Ogden Valley Branch library on Wednesday, May 29, 2002 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. We would like the community to express their thanks and appreciation by writing a short note to them.
