Remembered Family Christmas My father worked for the Air Force Finance Center in Denver as an accountant and in so doing was tied to the whims of the Air Force calendar. Most of our vacations had been cancelled or times changed because of an Air Force change of However, the Christmas I was fourteen, our family planned a Christmas in Mexico. Dad and mom told us if we could give up our tree, our decorations, or baking, and getting for one our year, we could afford to drive to Mexico and spend two weeks seeing sights we had never seen. The logistics of taking four children in a station wagon to a foreign country were tremendous. We and other packed only necessary clothing and would wash along the way. My family consisted of my older Peoa Country Store sister, myself, and two younger brothers, ages 1 1 and 4. My father did all the driving and mom managed the meals in the car and often times, the rowdy children in the backseat We drove south through Texas, where for the first time I saw mistletoe growing on the trees like large clumps of moss. Crossing the border took hours with visit visas in hand and everything taken from the car and checked. The border of Mexico is not a pleasant experience. However, after leaving the border and driving south, the countryside became clean and orderly. We would stop by roadside stands and buy oranges and other fresh fruits. We stayed in Gaudalajara, a beautiful city. We shopped and enjoyed ourselves in a city where all the people were gracious. South of the city is Lake Chapala. It was raining heavily as we passed the lake. It was at this point that our windshield wipers broke down. We pulled into what we thought was a the candles alight; Rejoice and be glad, all children tonight. Most of the general population in Mexico speaks a little English and that, along with smiles and sign language, was what finally resulted in the wipers being fixed. At the end of one long driving day, we stopped at the hotel, which our map had designated in Morelia in the state of Michoacan. It was a dismal looking building with gray outside walls and an old wooden door. As we entered die door, much to our surprise there was large patio with two stories of balconies all around a large tiled water fountain, which dominated the center of the patio with large poinsettia trees flowering all around. In Mexico, the poinsettia is known as the Christmas flower, or La Flor de la Navidad. Our stay at this hotel was marvelouys. The hotel restaurant and bakery greatly added to our car diet of tuna fish on crackers. We bought a large bag of fresh rolls the morning we left for Mexico City. We arrived in Mexico City on Christmas Eve day and the gravity of having no tree and no gifts hurt a little, but with our guide, we were kept busy visiting many places. Chapuitapec Park, is a large park in the city where we visited a castle which at one time was the home of Emperor Maxmillian and his and serenade as you pass their boats. Even the vendors were on smaller boats trying to sell their wares. We laughed at dad who ordered soup, when we returned to shore, and his came with the fish, head and all. Our last stop before crossing back into (he U.S. was the coastal town of Mazatlan in the state of Sinaloa. The market place here was especially delightful and not as big and overpowering as in the larger cities. In the open market were a variety of vegetables, fruits, meats, and dry foods, as well as beautiful flowers, both real and paper in magnificent colors. We brought home our share of souvenirs in the form of blankets and clothing. We swam in the ocean and played in the warm December sun and forgot the hustle and bustle of Christmas shoppers and snowstorms. We enjoyed each others company and learned to appreciate some different thing; about a Christmas together. That was all that really counted.
