Show 2C The Summit County Bee Friday, December 15, 1989 My Most Memorable Christmas by Patty Deros The Christmas I most remember is not one, but many. The years we celebrated together as a family. It always was a special day, even in olden times when the presents were not as plentiful as they seem to be these days. Some of the presents were even handmade, but valued even as much or more than more expensive ones purchased from the store. The best Christmases were the ones, when as a family, we gathered around the piano on Christmas Eve to arrange a program and then visit some of our special friends to sing the carols we had practiced. It was even better when tape players be came popular and we could take the piano along with us. It was sad when we married and moved away and were no longer able to participate in those fun times. One of our cherished memories came before we were even born. Dad had a story he liked to tell us, "To help us appreciate the blessings we enjoyed," he would say. When he had our attention, he would proceed. "It was during the war," he would say. "Which one," was always our rejoiner. "World War II," he would say with a grin "It was the Christmas of 1942 and we had been in England with the Canadian Engineers since the summer of 1940. My girl friend, your mother," he would add, "was still in Canada. "A new movie, Holiday Inn, had just arrived, so a bunch of us decided it would be a fun thing to see on Christmas Day. The place was filled with Canadians and Yankees who had the same idea. We were having a great time enjoying the movie when Bing Crosby began singing Tm Dreaming of a White futive groping for handervhicfs by grown men. "It was a real lesson to us on appreciation of the blessings we take for granted," he would conclude. And when we got old enough to appreciate his story, it has been a reminder for all of us that we tend to enjoy many of our richest blessings with little thought of from where they may have come, or of what sacrifices they might have meant for someone else. My most memorable Christmas? Each time I remember the true meaning of the word. When 1 remember that the important part is not the giving of toys and trinkets, which will break or get lost and forgotten, but the giving of love Christmas.' I've never heard so and consideration, which will last much sniffling nor seen so much forever. It Came Upon a Midnight Clear Fast away the old year passes, Hail die new, ye lads and lasses. Sing we joyous all together. Heedless of die wind and weather. Fa la la la la la la la !a... - Traditional Welsh Carol Fond wislies for a Merry ofClmstmas of from all us to all you!
