I was fascinated with the view. Rivers, hills, farms and towns would grow out of the distance, pass by with amazing speed and shrink away again. It got dark early and I could pick out Christmas lights on some of the houses. The trip to the dining car for dinner terrified me. We would open a door from our car and in a roaring clattering noise step across a jostling metal floor that covered the connection from one car to the next. The walls here were a kind of Coalville, Utah 0 us tor a TO) IMEW DIM, or USE accordion-lik- e affair that icy cold air whistled through. I was glad to be safe in the quiet dining car. I felt the eyes of the adults on me. There were no other children there. The tables were covered with pure white linen cloths and the silverware gleamed beside the huge white napkins. A black waiter with a towel on his arm took our order Carrigan Motors 308 East 125 North Morgan, Utah Chrysler, Dodge, Plymouth 829-324- negro I had ever seen. I can't remember what I ate but I was surprised at my little bowl of hot water, covered with a fresh napkin, that he brought after we finished. I had never seen a finger bowl before and enjoyed acting like a queen, daintily dipping my fingers and drying them on the little towel. After dinner we climbed up sane smelled strongly of cigarette smoke. We found our seats and I climbed up on mine. It was stickery on my legs. I wanted to sit on my Coalville Radiator 336-252- and flashed a smile with a wink at me. I think my eyes about popped out of my head. He was the first I must have been about five years old when we decided to go to Utah for Christmas. We lived in Richland, Washington, in the southeast corner of the state. I was so excited, because I had never been on a train before. Mom packed our things in a big brown leather suitcase. I wore a short little dress with a full skirt, and a lace tummed collar. Mom let me carry my doll which was a life-siz- e baby with eyes that would close when I put her down to sleep. I dressed her in a little dress and sweater and cap, then mom wrapped her expertly in a flannel receiving blanket It was cold when we went to the train station. Snow covered the ground and came up over the sides of my nice shoes. I had to be helped up the giant step into the train. We were up high, seated under a glass dome so I could see the stars and the big, round moon that seemed to ride along as fast as we were going. I wondered if they had the same moon in Utah. The moonlit landscape was a pale shade of blue. The snow sparkled on the meadows and hills. The shadows were deeper blue and the sky was a navy field with many stars. Pine trees looked solemn with their capes of snow, like proper ladies making their way home after church. As the train made its way through the blue mountains, every turn held new marvels. The icy stream beside us glittered here, ran inky black there and disappeared under the snowy bridges only to scrape over then run around snowcapped stones in its way. I hardly dared breathe for the fear the magic would aid. I was entranced by the night-tim- e beauty of the forests. I must have gone to sleep trying to see if the moon would make it all the way to Utah with us. The next morning, the conductor wanted to help me down from die train by taking my baby doll. He acted nervous, like he thought it was a real baby. Well, mom's arms were full so maybe he thought I was helping her with a little one, but I wouldn't let him have her. I ran straight into grandpa's arms. A light snow was falling, and grandpa's car was warm. I was full of happiness to be with my favorite people for Christmas. I have always treasured the memory of my first Christmas trip to Utah. 5 Merry Christmas & A Happy New Year, from all of us at Carrigan Motors Feliz Navidad Nachos Top tortilla chips with sharp Cheddar or Monterey Jack cheese.
