Show The Salt Lake Tribune Friday, January 17, 19K6 M7 United States Film Festival opens today; Heres schedule The long United States Film Festival opens Friday with a 7 30 p m screening of "The Trip to Bountiful," starring Geraldine Page, at the Regency Theatre, 2749 Parleys Way Saturday morning the festival will move to Park City, where for the remaining nine days scores of films will be shown in the Holiday Cinemas and the Egyptian Theatre. Highlights for the weekend include a directing seminar with Hector ("Pixote" and "Kiss of the Spider Woman") Saturday at 10 a m. in the Egyptian Theatre. Director Sidney Lumet (Serpico, Dog Day Afternoon, "Network, Garbo Talks) Prince of the City, will speak about his films in an informal Afternoon with Sidney Lumet Sunday at 4 p.m. in the Elks Building. Lumets latest film, "Power, starring Richard Gere, Julie Christie and Gene Hackman, will have its world premiere Sunday at 7 p.m. in the Egyptian. A screenwriters round table will be y Ba-ben- presented Sunday at 1 pm in the Egyptian Participants include Waldo Salt ("Midnight Cowboy," "Serpico," "Coming Home), William Wit-lif- f ("The Black Stallion," "Country"), Tom Rickman (Coalminer's Daughter) and Frank Pierson ("Cool Hand Luke, "Dog Day Afternoon"). The Saturday night premiere will be the French comedy, "One W'oman or Two," with Gerard Depardieu and Sigourney Weaver, at 4 and 7 p m. in the Egyptian. The festival is presented by the Sundance Institute in cooperation with the State of Utah Film Development Office. The director of the festival is Cinda Holt; programming director is Tony Safford, Lory Smith from the State Film Development office programmed the independent dramatic and documentary competitions, with Saundra Saperstein from Film Development coordinating both the and media covering the festival. Jury members for the dramatic competition include Hector Babenco; Molly Haskell, film critic for Vogue, Krzysztof Zanussi, the Polish director whose films include A Year of the Quiet Sun and The Power of Evil; director Martha Coolidge ("Valley Girl, "Real Genius"); and director Bobby Roth ("Heartbreakers). The documentary jury includes Julia Reichert, whose films include Growing Up Female, "Union Maids and Seeing Red; David Fanning, executive producer of the PBS news magazine "Frontline"; Canadian filmmaker Ron Mann (Imagine the Sound, "Poetry In Motion, "Lis- ten to the City); and Dennis O'Rourke, an Australian filmmaker whose works include Couldnt Ee Fairer and "Half Life.
