Show Journalism Society to Upgrade Watchdog Thf Sail Lake Tnbuof, Imai By Alf Pratte Tribune Correspondent The president of the 24, Society of Professional JournalistsSigma Delta Chi had some good and bad news for Utahs journalists and students of the media Thursday at BYU. The bad news, according to Robert Lewis, Newhouse News Service, Washington, D C., is that the public is not quite as pleased about the performance of the press in recent years. The frenzied rush to meet deadlines, poor taste, inaccuracy, errors anJ arrogance on the part of some reporters have contributed to a serious ahd growing publicpress credibility gap, Mr. Lewis said. He quoted from a recent Gallup poflthat 34 percent of the public belief the media are often inaccurate' Nearly half of those polled said they believe reporters dont care. "Thats just not right, Mr. Lewis claimed, warning: I shudder to think of what could happen to the First Amendment if an uninformed public ever gets the chance to amend the Bill of Rights. Theres a good chance they might try to take out the part about freedom of the press. All is not gloom for the media, however, the national president said. The orgOed news is that the ganization is fighting industry apathy and public ignorance with tools it knows best using mass media in a program called Operation Watchdog Beginning within the next few months, Mr. Lewis said that SPJSDX will launch a major infor, PROVO mation and education program through the print and broadcast thing we will try to get across to the people is that they dont have to love us. But they need to realize that it is in the best interests of every man, woman and child in America to have a watchdog working for them over government. Mr. Lewis said a major reason for the gap is that the public has lost the historical significance of the freedom of press clause in the First Amendment. "The people dont always understand what the First Amendment is all about. Judge Rodney S. Page said he agreed with the jurys verdict and felt the case against Lovell was proven beyond reasonable doubt. Judge Page sentenced Lovell to five years to life for both charges and then .ordered the minimum mandatory penalty for each count be set at 15 years. The judge ordered the sentences by served concurrently. Loyell told the Judge before sentencing, Im innocent. JoLp Hutchinson, defense attorney, filed; an immediate appeal. Mr. Hutchinson also asked the courts permission to be relieved of the case and to have a public defender appointed for appeal. Judge Page said he would determine Friday whether Lovell qualified under indigent status to quality for a lawyer. The judge said te would also decide at that time whether Mr. Hutchinson can be released. Tlte prosecution in the case contended that Lovell followed the victim home from a Clearfield private clubjCpril 3 and assaulted, kidnapped and raped her in South Ogden and Clearfield. LctYell testified that he met the victim the night of April 3 in Clearfield and (hat they mutually agreed to go have; something to drink. He told the jury they later went to his residence and had sexual intercourse before he returned her unharmed early the next 'morning. Thie victim, whose sworn testimony was fead to the jury, later that night contacted South Ogden police and reported she was raped. Jpdge Page allowed her testimony front a June 20 preliminary hearing to be! read in court. The victim was reported missing from; her home Aug. 11. Her car was found Aug. 18 on a dirt road in Weber1 County. Authorities believe the victim Lowell was originally charged with e four felony counts, which included two charges of rape. Counsel for both sides and the judge agreed to amend the charges, with the rapes a part of the aggravated sexual assault charge.
