Show 1QB The Salt Lake Tribune, Friday, January State Employees Recover Some Lost Wages Two State Wildlife Resources Division employees have recovered some of the salary they lost after they were charged with violating federal hunting laws and suspended for 30 days. A federal judge last summer dismissed charges against division employees James William Bates Sr, Price, and James William Bates Jr, Salt Lake City, along with a North Carolina man. But Division Director William H Geer said the two were guilty of "division policy improprieties and they have been reprimanded. After a federal grand jury in Salt Lake City charged the father and son with conspiracy and airborn hunting violations, the division suspended them for 30 days. Attorneys for Mr. Bates Jr. and Mr. Bates Sr. have been negotiating with the state for a reduction in the number of days they were suspended without pay. Mr. Bates Sr. retired shortly after the charges were filed in U S District Court for Utah. "If we don't treat our educational needs as a permanent facet of our state that needs to be dealt with in a permanent way, the results may be irreversable." While the governor's program of involving the community in education is helpful for teachers and students, Ms. Denslow said it doesn't adequately address the problem of crowded facilities. The four-couindictment charged Mr. Bates Jr., Mr. Bates Sr., and Doc Jones Thurston Jr., Charlotte, N.C., with using a helicopter to hunt a buffalo and desert bighorn sheep in November 1984. Mr. Thurston paid some $40,000 in a state lottery to hunt the animals in Southern Utah. The indictment alleged Mr. Bates and his son used a helicopter to herd the animals past Mr. Thurston so he could shoot them. It's unfortunate for everyone this occurred. I'm glad we were able to reach an settlement, Mr. Geer said. "It allows me to expend my time and energy on the division and the wildlife resources of the state. The action came at the conclusion of a public hearing in which Dennis R. Wall, representative of the Estes Co., Tuscon, Ariz., and Brent Rose, an attorney representing the company, explained that Estes needs the policy in order to study the feasibility of the annexation. The annexation ordinance is scheduled for adoption by the City Council on Feb. 6. The filing of the plat is scheduled for late July. The only opposition to the annexation came from Kimball Nelson, of the Department of Wildlife Resources, who pointed out the affect the annexation could have on wildlife in the area.
