A native of he grew up in Wharrural Texas he often ton, a town near Houston writes about what he knows best, the places and people of the rural South. "I think ideas and themes for films choose you more than you choose them, he said in a recent telephone conversation from his New York apartment. "Its true that I come from a very extended family. I have lots of cousins and aunts and uncles. I was always surrounded by family. And as you know, we Southerners are great storytellers. The oral tradition is very strong. Sometimes the people who were dead before I was born were as real to me as those who were alive," The writer also has a knack for creating strong female roles in his films: the forgiving and tough Rosa Lee (Tess Harper) in "Tender Mercies; and Elizabeth Vaughn, a strong, resilient woman played by Haile Foote, the writers daughter, in 1918. "I have known some strong women in my time, said Foote. His latest film includes one of the strongest female roles in recent memory. The Trip to Bountiful" is, as one critic said, about nothing, and about everything.
