THE COCA-COLKID," Eric Roberts ploys o whiz kid who Is sent to Australia to boost sales of the popular soft drink. There he meets his match In the sensual and earthy Greta Scacchl. This Is a giddy comedy obout America's preoccupation with Itself ond with the Almighty Dollar. The performances are chormlng, while the script could use a little tightening up. Still, a nice little comedy. Rated R. Blue Mouse. THE COLOR PURPLE," Steven Spielberg's film adaptation of Alice Wolker's novel Is a beautiful film about a young, black woman who rises above the subiugatlon of others to find her place In the sun. Spielberg softens some of book's explicitness, but the emotional power Is there. With a cast lead by Whoopi Goldberg and Danny Glover, this Is one of the best acted films of the year. It Is also uplifting and Inspiring. Rated PG-1Crossroads, Cottonwood Mall. "ENEMY MINE," What starts out as a stunning and completely original science fiction film eventually becomes a melodramatic piece of hokum. It's a shame, because the stunning effects ond two fine performances by Lou Gossett Jr. and Dennis Quald ore wasted. The story Is set In the distant future. T wo enemies one human, the other a find themselves stranded "drac" on a remote planet. Will they kill one another? Or will they make peace? An Interesting premise which goes hopelessly awry. Rated PG-1Midvalley Cinemas, Flick, Fashion Ploce. "THE GODS MUST BE CRAZY," A pop bottle foils from an airplane flying over Southern Africa, nearly striking XI, a bush-maIn the head. He sees It os a gift from the gods and embarks on a lourney to return It. This Is o fresh, wonderful comedy as we follow XI's exploits. He runs Into a scientist living In the bush, and a group of revolutionaries. Their three stories collide at one point with hilarious results. Rated PG. Utah. "HEAD OFFICE," Danny DeVito, Rick Moranls, Judge Relnhold, Eddie Albert, Wallace Shawn and Jane Seymour all appear In this comedy obout high flnonce and mult- Rated inational corporations. Sandcastle. Brandauer Is her husband In an arranged marriage. Sydney Pollack does a masterful ob of combining all these elements for an extraordinary film. Rated PG. Family Center Plaza 5400. Trolley, Crossroads, Mann BIG ADVENTURE," Pee Wee Herman makes his motion picture debut. While this endearing wimp Is good for some laughs, his antics are not enough to fill movie. This seems to be the o feature-lengtsame oke played over and over again. Rat"PEE-WEE- Plaza 5400. "YOUNG SHERLOCK HOLMES," Owing much more to Steven Spielberg than to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, this film speculates about what would happen had Holmes and Watson met while schoolboys. The strong points are the young cast, the Victorian setting, and the remarkable special effects that you expect out of a Spielberg production (Barry Levinson directed). The weak point Is that It resembles so many other Spielberg movies that at times It loses Its own Identity. Rated PG-1Carriage Square Trolley, Olympus, Trolley Square. h ed PG. Sandy, Valley Twin. "PRIZZI'S HONOR," With such names as John Huston (director) and Jack Nicholson and Kathleen Turner, you would think this would be one of the best films of last year. Not the case. This dark comedy Is often flat, slow and quirky. Nicholson has some witty lines, but the chemistry you would expect lust Isn't there. Rated R. Mldvallev Cinemas. "REMO WILLIAMS, THE ADVENTURE BEGINS," A cross between "The Karate Kid," "Indiana Jones" and the James Bond films, this Is a movie without an Identity of Its own. Instead, Its a collection of adventures all of which have been done before. Fred Ward plays Remo. He Is trained by o Korean master (Joel Grey) and sent out to uncover a corrupt munitions dealer. Some good action and some funny moments, but nothing you haven't seen before. Rated PG-1Sandy, Valley Twin. "ROCKY IV," Sylvester Stollone relies on the same old formula to get us cheering for Rocky Balboa, and quite frankly Its wearing a little thin. This Is an SNL skit stretched out to feature film length. Some of the one-lineore funny, the plot Is asinine. Aykroyd ond Chase play two Inept CA recruits who find themselves in the center of a potential nucle-o- r conflict between the super powers. John Landis directs. Rated PG. Midvalley Cinemas, Trolley North, Cottonwood Mall, Flick. "TEEN WOLF," This teen movie wos made before Michael J. Fox hit the big time with "Back to the Future." A so-svariation on the werewolf plot. Rated PG. Sandy "TO LIVE AND DIE IN L.A.," William Friedkln's new film Is obout how those who break the low and those who enforce It are sometimes cut out of the some cloth. This Is movie where the a slick, screen explodes with violence. Sometimes the brash style works, grabbing the audience and carrying It along for the ride. More often the style Is too much, too explicit, detracting from the story of two Secret Service agents trocklng down a loathesome counterfeiter. In this case, less would have been more. Rated R. Sandy. The best title "TRANSYLVANIA of the year, one of the silliest movies of the year. Jett Goldblum ond Ed Begley Jr. ore tabloid reporters sent to Transylvania to dig up some dirt on vampires. As a dance with Mikhail Baryshnikov and movie It Is exhilarating. As a tale Gregory Hines obout espionage and Soviet repression. It Is contrived ond predictable. Rated PG-1Midvalley Cinemas, Trolley Corners, Mann has audiences screaming, of stomping their feet and making enthusiasm. A "JAGGED EDGE," Jeff Bridges ploys 0 newspaper editor who Is accused ot his wile s brutal murder In this ettective, finely constructed thriller. Glenn Close Is the attorney who gets romantically Involved while defending him. Good performances ond a good script make tor o sophisticated, mystery that keeps you guessing. Rated R. Sandy. "THE JEWEL OF THE NILE," Michael Douglos, Kathleen Turner and Danny DeVito return In this sequel to "Romancing the Stone." While It has lots of octlon and some good, comedlc performances, Jewel of the Nile" cant escape feeling like o retread. Despite o charming Douglos ond Turner, this doesn't match up to the original. "KING SOLOMON'S MINES," Richard Chomberloln, In a role which suspiciously resembles Harrison Fords Indiana Jones, ploys an adventurer drawn to the African lungle In search of the legendary mines of King Solomon In this remake. "MAD MAX: BEYOND THUNDER-DOME,- " The third Installment In the Mod Max series pits the hero, once again ployed by Mel Gibson, against the sinister matron of a shanty town, played by Tina Turner. Dlrectorwrlter brings the same frenetic energy of the earlier films to this one, and gets more Into Max's character here. All In all, a good addition to the "Mod Max" series. Rated PG-1Valley Twin. "ONCE BITTEN," Lauren Hutton ploys a vampire who must suck the blood of young sex male virgins to stay alive.
