Show The Salt Lake Tribune, Sportlight By Steve Goldstein Tony Robinson Chuck Long Payton Named Top NFL Player Chicago Bears running back Walter Payton was awarded the Maxwell Club's 1985 Bert Bell Trophy as the National Football League Player of the Year Thursday not only for his outstanding running ability but for his leadership. Maxwell Club president Francis Bagnell said intangibles led the club to choose Payton for the 27th annual award, named for a former NFL commissioner. He is truly the heart of that team and leads by example, giving his best every single time he steps on the field, Bagnell said. The Payton was the unanimous choice. Payton will receive the Bert Bell trophy and Iowa quarterback Chuck Long will be honored as the 1985 college player of the year at the annual Maxwell dinner in Philadelphia Feb. 18.
