Show 2B The Salt Lake Tribune, Friday, January 17J986 Radio Commercials Not True, Just a Market Test United Press International A commercial on 19 area radio stations telling of a huge cavern discovered in the Wasatch Mountains that promises untold natural wonders is a fabrication being used as a marketing test, those behind it admit. The commercial is a an effort to test how much radio advertising reaches listeners, said Terry Schmidt, head of the Salt Lake Market Radio Broadcasters Association, sponsors of the ad. No. 1 it is not hurting anybod he said. No. 2 this is a research project to gather information to test recall of product. The commercial tells of a cavern in the mountains that border Salt Lake City that has many natural wonders. Last year a remarkable discovery was made deep a cavern as wide as a football within the Wasatch Front field and over five stories high, the commercial says. It says "florescent blue waterfalls cascade down to an - undergound river roaring through tunnels, disappearing into seemingly solid walls of granite, and adds, The Wasatch Cavern, an experience youll never forget." Officials said the plan is to run more spots with greater details the next six weeks, then do a telephone survey to determine how many people have heard the ads. It does say things that arent true but its not the type of deception or falsehood thats going to cause anyone any problem, said Jon Bagley, marketing director of KSL Radio, which ran the commercial. KSL TV, which is owned by the same corporation, exposed the deception Thursday on its nightly broadcast. KSL TV said KSL Radio decided on Thursday to cancel the spot. This afternoon, KSLs operations manager pulled the spot, the station said. While he says the ad doesnt break any laws, he's not sure what future spots will say and doesn't like the idea of promoting something that doesnt exist. aLuhousepcan DELLAS FLOWERS KGIETS AND NURSERYt-AND- l MEgB 3 XMASiMOVINGlSAlI The Christmas Tree Trim Stores!
