Show The Salt Lake Tribune F M5 17, rida), January Ray film lakes viewers inside India cusloms to his wife, Bimala (Swatilekha By Terry Ornie Tribune Staff Writer Through his films, Satyajit Kay has earned a reputation for showing the world the nuances of his homeland India. In "The Home and the World," an evenly-paced- , dignified drama, he does that and more He takes us inside the customs of India, and tells us something about human nature in the process. The Home and the World is part love story, part exploration of the Film review conventions of Indian home life, and part history lesson on the issues tearing at the country around the turn of the century. Set In Bengal Set in East Bengal in 1908, the film encompasses a number of issues: the rift between Hindus and Moslims, prompted by actions u! the g( lament; the isolationism and terronsm mounted by those who opposed those actions; and, somewhat unrelated, the orthodox practice of secluding women inside their husband's homes. s American will recognize one of the actors in this drama, Victor Banerjee, the Indian actor who portrayed Dr. Aziz in David Leans A Passage to India. Here Banerjee is Nikhil, a wealthy but a man who has been educated abroad and is more liberal and modern in his thinking than his contemporaries. He's a man who considers the consequences of his actions thoroughly before making a move. He also is a great believer in personal freedom. It is a belief that he applies film-goer- land-owne- r, Chat-terjee- ), although the consequences are potentially devastating The central conflict in "The Home and the World" is between Nikhil and his school-day- s friend Sandip (.Toumi-tr- a Chatterjee). Sandip opposes the government's plan to split Bengal into two districts, and he is the leader of a political movement which advocates boycotts of British goods and discreet terrorism. Nikhil agrees in principle with Sandip s politics, but not with his tactics. At the same time, Nikhil has been broadening his wifes education and exposure to the world. He hires a woman to teach her English; he encourages her to read newspapers. He tries time and time again to convince her to leave the inner rooms of the house and venture to the parlor and meet his friends. She resists such entreaties to break with custom, until one day, when Nikhil convinces her to meet his friend Sandip. Little does he know that his wife will be so taken with Sandips charisma and political rhetoric. Several Successes "The Home and the World" succeeds on many levels. It tells an involving tale of a woman who finds freedom intoxicating and finds herself infatuated with a man who is not her husband. It tells an equally involving story about two men who find themselves at a crossroads in their friendship. And it paints an interestat least for the westing portrait of the ways of life in a ern viewer foreign place and time. The film, which is in Bengali and English with English subtitles, opens Friday for a limited run at the Blue Mouse.
