Translating these stories into stitches can be very satisfactory, because apart from being fun to do, these designs will go on appealing to generation after generation. In my latest book, Children's World, to be published this month by Scribners, I have suggested all kinds of techniques for interpreting them in needlework. One of my favorites is what I call coloring book cross-stitcBy overlaying any simple childrens book illustration with Trace Erase (TM) fabric (that web, available at fabric stores) you can trace the outlines through with a pen. Then stretch some Aida (evenweave cross-stitc- h fabric) in an embroidery frame. Baste your traced web with the design in position on top. With one thread of black embroidery floss, work all outlines in backstitch. Now Theres Outline Then, tear away the Trace Erase (TM) fabric inside and outside the design. You now have a coloring h. non-wov- r about in boats panel from Erica Wilsons Children's World. It also enables you to accu felt-tipp- . h! from the books, because you only not first have to trace them once on to tracing paper and then on to cloth. You can also work on any colored background light or dark. Cross-Stitc- h Panel I used this method to work a h panel from The Wind in the Willows. I adapted drawings of that indomitable character, Toad, and put them together with one of the most famous sayings in the book There is nothing absolutely1 half so much worth doing nothing as simply messing about in boats. The phrase combines with a series of pictures of Toad falling over in his rowboat to make a wonderful giftfor anyone who likes sailing or boating. In fact, to show their good Yacht sportsmanship, the New York Club might consider hanging the used panel where the Americas Cup to be!
