Show S Tte felt Lke T.fetat Sunday, November 27, 1983 Carly Simon returns with positive attitude and new album By Steve Morse shouldnt have even tried Boston Globe Writer MARTHAS VINEYARD, Mas. The eutsmn sfternocn has turned chilly, but Csrlv Simon Is still bounding around her backwoods estate In a thin white dress, plajdng with her five horses, laughing toward the distant green hills, posing (or photos in her childrens swing and just feeling good to be away from the busy whirl of Manhattan, where she spends most of her time. She talks vibrantly and radiates health. Dearly this is a different Cartv Simon from the near skeleton who had lost 23 pounds from nervous anxiety three yean ago and cut short a tour after a shaky date at Boston's Orpheum Theater. James Taylor "That was the wont time of my life," she says, adding that the halting of the IPSO tour coincided with the collapse of her marriage to singer James Taylor and with a serious operation performed on their young son, Ben, to remove a kidney. "That tour was a nightmare. I wasnt prepared for it emotionally, and I - it she says. But all that appears to be ancient history. Simon, 38, whose string of hits in the last decade includes Anticipation," Youre So Vain and Nobody Does It Better, has with a positive attitude and a courageous new album, Hello Big Man. The record has a few obligatory songs about her break-u- p with Taylor. She plaintively sings that they had it all but blew it in the center-piec- e song It Happens Every Day, which also features the gentle guitar of Andy Summers of the Police. Mostly, however, the album features fluid, breezy rock and reggae, as well as picturesque local color in "Menemsha, a love song named for a Marthas Vineyard fishing village where Simon spent many girlhood summers and still maintains a small cabin apart from her estate in Lam- berts Cove. Rsmantic Home I feel its an up record. Theres a lot of fun on it, she says, ushering her visitors into the comfortable, d There are times I wish I were a bigger star, or times I wish more people would buy my record and know about me, she says, flopping in a white wicker chair. But I think I've come to terms with the fact that I'm not going to go all over the world telling people about me and making them buy the album. If I g circle have a slightly ' of fans, Ill be happy. Although some writers have assumed shell become more aggressive in her career now that her children are older (Ben is 6 and Sally, her other child by Taylor, is 9), she still doubts this will happen. Its not as if I took off to be a mother and am returning from my hiatus, she says with a sharp laugh. career Ive never had a to begin with. Ive never taken too much time away from home. I do all Newfound Balaauce Her newfound balance, she says, sterns from her decision to stop fighting herself. Instead of fretting, for instance, over the dramatic differences in the songs on the new album, which range from titillating, n anthems iike You Know What to Do (to Me)," to poetic, cerebral ballads, she has ceased to worry about it. "For a while I tried to do that with myself. I tried to pigeonhole myself and figure out who I was. Id say, Well, lam an intellectual. I have an education Im a reader, a thinker, a philospher. I chose Carl as my actor because I thought he had just the right look, she says. He looks a little bit dan- bit also like someone I gerous, would go for. The video is being aired on the music cable station MTV, and Simon hopes soon to con- vert three other new songs into Her biggest video project, howevspecial er, will soon be a for RCA Videodiscs. Originally it was expected she would thread together a plot from her songs similar to the "My One and Only" stage show culled from the music of but now shes George Gershwin thinking of writing an entirely new musical. "Im more interested in writing than anything else, she says. "I'm interested in writing longer forms of things, whether it be a musical show, a novel, a play or a short story." Simon does have confidence, however, in her capacity to remain an undying romantic no matter what fate throws at her. Rather than be bitter about her breakup with Taylor, for example, she now looks on the bright side of what they had together for 10 years. My relationship with James Taylor was extremely positive," she says. You could accuse me of refusing to look straight in the eye of truth, but I tend to remember the good things as opposed to the bad. I think most people do, and I certainly count many more good things in my marriage than bad. Our two children are definitely the products of two people who were in love and very much in the same camp, she says, bowing forward in her chair. I dont want to rush into it, but Im not at all cynical about getting married again. Im still very much looking forward to that same kind of union. Simon even pokes fun at herself in the new song "Floundering a semi autobiographical account of a woman who has pursued self-hel- p trips from Tibetan Buddhism to hypnotism and from Scientology to primal screaming. By singing about them, she manages to put them in perspective. I suppose what I am really ready for is to believe in myself, she says with a determined stare.
