There has been way, and thats what Im trying to convince these folks who wont get involved. In five seasons as Viasuington States head coach, Walden has direrected the Cougars to a cord, including an 3 mark m 1981 when the Pullman school went to its first postseason game, the Holiday Bowl in San Diego, m 50 years. Washington State has had a hard time keeping its head football coaches in recent years. Before Walden took over at Washington State in 1978, the Cougars had lost two head coaches, Jackie Sherrill and Warren Powers, in two seasons. Sherrill now is at Texas A&M and Powers is at Missouri. Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Bill Arnsparger confirmed that he has had exploratory talks with Athletic Director Bob Brod-hea- d of Louisiana State University about the head football coachs job now held by Jerry Stovall. Brodhead, the Dolphins director of finance until he became LSU athletic director m 1982, is expected to make a recommendation on whether to retain Stovall during a meeting Friday of the LSU Board of Supervisors. There is strong speculation will recommend firing after four years of a Stovall, five-yecontract. There was talk, too, that Brodhead would recommend hiring Arnsparger as head coach and also former LSU quarterback coach Mack Brown as offensive coordinator. Brown just finished his rookie season as head coach at Appalachian State University, winning six and losing five games. LSU finished with a disappointing record this season after an campaign that included a 0 loss to Nebraska in the 1983 Orange Bowl. Walden, whose Cougars closed out the 1983 season with five consecuYou tive victories to finish with a 4 record, has two years left on his Washington State contract. He said: I made a promise to my children that if it were at all possible if it were my choice to make that they could spend their junior and senior years m the same high school. My youngest, Murray, is a junior at Pullman High School. Before Washington States 17-- 6 season-endin- g victory over Washington here Nov. 20, Walden lashed out at the lack of fan support for the Cougars in their home football games this season. Its recruiting season and the rumors are flying, Walden said in a 7-- 2 telephone interview this week. Sure, Ive said Id be open to talk about another job, but who wouldn't? But, no, I havent talked to anybody. He said he is looking for increased fan s' ..port in Pullman next season. Im looking for my people to . un- derstand how bad it is I want to stay," he said. We havent gotten the support we need. People need to lead, follow or get the hell out of the 4-- 7 21-2- 0-- 6 Tigers also finished last in the Southeastern Conference standings for the first time ever. In a telephone interview Friday from Miami, Arnsparger confirmed he talked with Brodhead within the last 10 days to two weeks, but insisted the discussions were exploratory. I was interested in what Bob had to say . . . interested in finding out more about it," said Arnsparger. Nothings been offered. LSUs always been a good place to be, and Id , be interested. His 20 years in the National Football League have included two seasons as head coach of the New York Giants and 10 of the last 13 as Miamis defensive coordinator. The 1983 Lombardi Award, given annually to the college player deemed the best lineman in the nation, has candidates from the countrys top two college football teams.
