Show 10F Sunday, November 27, The Sail Lake Tribune 1983 Workers Getting Involved Little Guys Suggestions Save Money at Ford Motor Company By Ann Job Woolley Associated Press Writer At an Omaha, Neb., DETROIT Ford dealership, workers helped save an estimated $500,000 in nearly two years by suggesting reductions in parts supplies and improvements in inventory control. Employees at a Pompano Beach, car dealerFla., Lincoln-Mercur- y ship helped their boss save $1,000 a g month by devising a new, system for ordering parts. The dealer also took their suggestion to put in a wheelchair ramp to help disabled customers get to a waiting area. In Westlake, Ohio, a Ford dealership updated and cleaned up its service department on the advice of workers. The efforts are part of Ford Motor Co.s push to get its dealerships around the country to implement employee involvement groups that allow workers to get involved in time-savin- the running of the business. They are designed to improve worker morale and product quality. Signing of Contract Ford started employee involvement in its factories following the signing of a labor contract with the United Auto Workers union in 1979. The number two U.S. automaker began pushing the program for dealers in January 1982, and spokesman Warren LeBaron estimates up to a fifth of the companys approximately 1,100 U.S. daalers are participati- ng. He said the company hopes a majority of its dealers will have em- ployee involvement programs within the next year or two. At General Motors Corp., spokesman David Hudgens said GM has a program available to dealers that is similar to Fords but was unable to provide details. Chrysler Corp. does not have such from the parts department, saving $1,000 a month in loaner car expenses because the dealership has been able to cut the number of loaners given to customers whose cars are not ready by the promised time, Chiavaroli said. Richard McFaydens, vice presi- a program for dealers, a spokesman who asked not to be identified said. Fords program is not mandatory but has been encouraged by company mailings. Ford also issued a booklet explaining how dealers can implement the program. dent and general manager of Working Together We have everyone working McFaydens Ford in Omaha, said he instituted his pregram in December 1981 because he didnt know enough to run every aspect of the business. Hash Out Problems Nine workers meet regularly to hash out problems between departments, and committee meetings are also held for the dealership s work force, McFayden said. Because of workers advice, the dealership started a new policy of requiring prepayment for special-orde- r parts to reduce the likelihood a customer will drop the order and leave the dealership with an unneed to- gether, normally, they want to stay by themselves, Joe Chiavaroli, executive vice president and general manager of Pompano Lincoln-Mercur- y in Pompano Beach, said about his program. Were like a family. At his dealership, 10 of the 105 employees meet once a month in employee involvement groups. The program, started in April, initiated a new parts ordering system in which vehicle parts that must be ordered from outside the dealership are highlighted by a red underline on service orders. That brings prompt attention ed part, McFayden said. At John Lance Ford in Westlake, r secretary-treasureBob Wair said abot 25 workers have helped solve the dealerships main problems, which were in the service depart- dent, said he does not "need the Ford Motor Company to tell me how to communicate with my own people. He added that Ford officials belong in the manufacturing end; they should stay out of the retail busi- Has New Equipment The department has new equipment, and thanks to workers advice, a lot of wasted time due to poor communication between the body, service and parts areas has been eliminated, he said. I think the basic thing is to listen to what their problems have been, Wair said about the quarterly employee meetings. The dealership began the program after the owner noticed Fords employee groups in factories a few years ago, Wair said. But some dealers are critical. Ed Mullane, a Ford dealer in N.J., and a longtime dissi Strength of Program Chris Smith, vice president and general manager at Bob Smith Ford in Pittsburgh, admitted he did not know how strong the program, involving seven workers, is at his dealership. We started them group meetings when Ford was real crazy about it about five or six months ago, he said. I would say that the benefits and changes have been rather than concrete here . . . its a little bit better than having two guys stand across the shop and scream at each other. I really think they run out of things to talk about, he added. ment ... fi HFHutton uQu'dniZBDQIB Spartan Health Sciences University is located on the island of St. Lucia m the West Indies.
