Show WEEKLY REFLEX DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL. MARCH 2, 1978 " 4 I m fm 1 ?s By DAY E H1GHAM went out on the race so no one really knew who won as Bryson and a swimmer from expected the Buunt.ful High swimming team led the fcrtup of local athletes into the sU'e 4.A swimming meet last week at Brigham Young I niversity As Cottonwood touched almost together AFTER A short argument and a night to think about it, the judges ruled the two as THE BRAVES had won the Region One crown easily the week before and thev were considered as one of the top live teams going into the state meet As luck would have it the Braves came away with third place honors with a team total 224 points Skyline H gh won the meet with 272 with Granger second at 234 Coach Jack Senneger was co champions There's no doubt in my mind that Bryson touched first, noted Coach Senneger, but he also noted he was biased Bryson himself says he knows he touched first The medley relay team was docked in 1 41 454 which is one of the fastest times recorded for that event in high school in the state this year Rumor has it that this will earn the team All American status pleased with the team's effort "Just about all of our times were better than what we posted in region U e swam well but a couple of other schools swam exceptionally In swimming, like well most sports, the team that gets hot and has a good meet BRYSON, WHO had a good meet, also placed fourth in the 100 yard backstroke Fourth might not sound like much to some people but the first four places all touched at the same time with only 0 8 will win THE ONLY argument the Braves lost was that of one of seconds separating their breaststrokers being disqualified in the finals 'The judge ruled that his head went under the water which is illegal The way you in can tell is to look and see if there is white water behind the swimmers neck It s like when theres a rock in a stream, as the water goes over that rock, the wa'er behind that rock is white because the water is rushing over it The judge admitted that there was white water behind the neck which tells me that its impossible to be under water and still have that white water The event didn't cost the Braves the title so not much was said the 200 yard individual medley, Eric Pope, 4th, and Mark Giatras, 9th in the diving competition, Robert Reeder, in the 500 yard freestyle. Bill Huber in the 100 yard backstroke, Balling, 3rd the 9th m 100 yard MITCH Eiting and Tim Quinn, 8th in the 100 free- style, Quinn, 4th, m the 100 yard breaststroke, and the 400 yard freestyle relay team came away with 7th place Viewmont got a top per- formance out of Mike Fisher Mike placed fourth in the 200 yard individual medley event and a second place finish m the 100 yard breaststroke competition Chuck Fisher also got points for Coach Casey Jackson in the 100 yard breast. The Viking 400 yard freestyle relay team also took home some points as they placed second in the consolation event CLEARFIELD wasnt without their heroes either as the Falcons took third m the diving competition with Steve Allred who was the Region One champion Other point getters were Mike Nelson in the 500 yard freestyle, Mitch Drake in the 100 yard butterfly and Kent Palmer m the 100 yard breast The Falcons 00 yard relay squad placed first in the consolation event for their final points SWIMMING is the type of sport that goes many times but these people have put m a lot of time and effort and should be a roll Will Lies! By DAVE WIGHAM state meet Bountiful got first place finishes out of their medley relay team and senior Bryson Smith in the 50 yard freestyle electric timing device A couple of red hot clubs wili collide in the first round of the state 4A basketball tournament on Tuesday, March 7 at 6 30 p m when the Layton Lancers go head to head with the Leopards from East High LAYTON three IS on a game winning streak entering 1 -- Astorga, ChevroL nmm OjU hes only been getting the By DAVE WIGHAM Woods Cross is trying to set record, or history if you will, by qualifying for the state 3A basketball tournament which begins in a couple of weeks at the Weber State new Events Center THE YOUNG Cats could become the first school in history to go to a state meet as a first year school, without seniors as well Coach Bakers troops took a big step last Friday in reaching that goal as they downed a young stubborn Davis club This is the first victory for the Cats over a varsity Dart squad IT TOOK a last second shot on a rebound by Jeff Ostler to give the ecstatic Cats the win Ostlers shot was the only lime that Woods Cross held ihe lead, but in basketball once is enough if it comes at the right time Currently the Wildcats are in a tie with the Darts with marks with two identical games left The Cats play a team that is under them and one that is at the head of the league m the home stretch 7--5 ON FRIDAY the Cats travel to South High for an afternoon affair with the Cubs, who record thus far Then next week due to the possibilities of playoffs the games have been moved up to Tuesday and at that time the Cats host Logan who is tied for the league lead with Box Elder at If youre a Woods Cross fan and expect the worst, which would mean a split, the Cats mark would end up with a which would be good for fourth and fifth and a trip to the tourney The Cats could beat Logan if they have a good night but it's very doubtful have an 9-- 8-- they would lose to South COACH Baker has been concerned with the fact that points out of two of his players but last week the Cats got a shot in the arm with good nights from Mark LeCheminant and Brent Horton and Lynn Westergard who all had their moments of putting the ball into the hoop Those two, center Mark McCieery and guard Jeff Ostler continue to lead the Cats m scoring with 20 4 and 16 8 averages respectively WOODS Cross used almost everyone that dressed in the win over Davis and the coaches saw some positive things from sophomores Rodger Lowe and Mark Eamshaw along with juniors Tod Baliff and Gregg Tuttle The Cats now have about ten players that they can go to for help In the South game the Cats will have to be ready mentally to play with the Cubs The one problem they could run into is complacency and overconfidence, but the coaches know the importance of this win and will drill it into the players all week THE CUBS will come at them with some good players of their own, especially the likes of Todd Pace and Mark Orulhan Logan on the other hand comes to town with four players who are averaging in the double figure ranks The Grizzlies have been playing good ball of late and would like nothing better than to go into the state meet as the region champions JOHN Fjelsted, Courtney Skabelund, Richard Reese and Craig Smith are all pouring in points for the high flying Grizzlies Woods Cross has a shot at a sweep, using the home floor advantage to get the Logan club The Cats have a playoff berth cinched, but they dont want to be number six in the league ' A IN KAYSVILLE LAWN MOWER REPAIRING PmiY Cvm I Ym w Brtn Btm i H 7 C48 Btrmttm Wwiurtwi" SALES - SERVICE OUMWMtTUtM MO M.OWe HAflMMaMO 766-131- KRVICt 3 ENGINE REPAIR 35 SMALL ISO N. They have come a long way since that n win THAT LOSS by the Lancers could work two ways One the Layton kids could have the mental advantage with revenge on their minds, and the other being they might be intimidated by a club that has beaten them once already East is basically a zone defensive team, they report that they have good size and speed and like to run a lot The five main guns for the Leopards are Doug Milne, the coachs son and leading scorer on the team with a 17 point average, who stands about 6T The other guard is Jeff Davis, a 5 10 senior who is the playmaker on the floor UP FRONT, the Leopards have some horses m 6' 6 Rich Gremillis, 65 Gregg Grant, and 63" Chris Furgis All are seasoned seniors on the club and all are completing their second year of varsity competition The top reservers for the Dick Milne club are a couple 63 leapers in John Stevens and Ned Maxwell, This badly smashed Chevrolet Camar is hung donated bv Olsen Chevrolet Companv of Lav ton to Cle uln High N hool fur use in the school's automotive repair class left to right art Garv hit it h service manager, Kent Murdot k, di ah r Grant Mod Clearfield i and Jim High pnnujial, Sam Young dealer jn t ntieg kev - u AUTO HEEDS REPAIRS 711i THIS opening round pits the Woods Cross Faces a Huter, butterfly Lancers u Leopards THE JUDGES and timers were all from Salt Lake City schools which to me is funny Why cant the association have unbiased judges for a The them apart Bountiful got other points from Mike Eiting, 7th and Mike Qumn in the 200 yard freestyle, Dave Balling, 8th, and Basketball is officiary over for the players and coaches at Bountiful High but the Braves had the type of season that no one will forget very easily BRAVES were for many an anxious moment this past year starting off in pre season and going on through the regular league play the Braves were never a dull team to watch Pre season was an up and down thing for the Bountiful club, winning four of their six THE Woods Cross, Davis, Logan and Granger were all victims of the Bountiful crew Only Kearns and Ben Lomond could find the magic potion in order to defeat them attempts Robison calls their first loss in league play to the Sky View dub the game that set the trend for things to come. We had some conCOACH fidence after the n wins but then to lose to them on our home floor took a lot out of the kids as far as con fidence and enthusiasm True from that point goes on, the Braves were chasing the league leaders throughnui the year The next week the Braves lost a one pointer to a very good Weber team As it turns out the Warriors turned into one of the top clubs in the 1fI Clearfield High School s ajtu riecnamcs class is going to attempt to repair a Chevrolet Camaro which was badly damaged in a train derailment near Salt Lake ( it v If another game at home to the Clearfield club In a league l.ke Region One losing a game at home is almost unheard of if you have anv intentions of winning the title The Braves then went on to THE CAR, which appears to have been hit by a tram m stead of jolted against the guard rails when the train jumped the track, was donat ed to the high school by Olsen Chevrolet Company of Lay ton Donation of the car is part split the next two games dropping an away contest to Viewmont while downing an laysville improving club Layton on their own floor the first round over the Braves had a 2 5 nark which put them near ihe bottom of the league In the second go round it was almost a repeat of the first They led the entire game against Sky View only to lose in the final three minutes, then dropped another one pointer to Weber, who was undefeated at the time Then came the crippling blow to their efforts for a state berth, they lost at home to Bonneville The following week the Braves went out and took Clearfield into triple overtime before bowing to them with yet another one SO WITH point loss HAD THE Braves won those one winters they would have been in Salt Lake City in a week The Braves then lost their last three games of the year, to Viewmont, Roy and Layton, to end a frustrating year FRUSTRATING in the tana serv utmanagr program bv Chevrolet Motor Division of Genera1 Motors Corporation to g've tars and trucks damagtd b floods, wrecks and other mishaps on the wav to dealt r showrooms to schools and other institutions to aid au tomotive classes of a TO DATE, General Motors has given nearly 2 000 such cars and truiks to schools in most of the 50 states accord mg to Jim Astorga Chevrolt t area service manager In addition, he said Chevrolet has also donated many car and truck engines iransmissions and oiher auto Miss April Butters who left to serve an LDS mission to New York City, has returned home due to a knee injury suffered there in an accident and will await surgery After she is well she will return to complete her mission She is a member of the Kaysvilie Eighth LDS Ward and i:ui k parts to vocational siud.ts vt However, the wrecked hides can never be driven STUDENTS CAN repair them and learn all thev can liom the experience, THE EAST coaching staff is pleased with the progress that they have made and they feel that they have the momentum going into the tournament They expiect a very physical game from the Lancers We know they have a lot of size up front as well but we feel we have more speed The Layton team is on a hot streak of their own, they had to win some big games to get to where they are and thats exactly what Coach Moon and his troops have done Lancer basketball is a little different this year as opposed to a year ago, last year the mam objective was to get the ball inside to their big man gtb recently Mr and Mrs BUTCH BUY CARPET Dick Whitesides have returned from El Toro, Calif where they enjoyed a visit for a few days last week with their son and daughter in law, Attor ney and Mrs Jim Whitesides and daughter Julie sense that they lost the close ones, and they had their share They were never out of a ball game at the half but on one or two occasions they had terrible second halves which resulted in runaways The Braves have some talent coming up in the next few years Their juniors were while the respectable sophomores won the league Over 20 Yrs.
