Show WEEKLY REFLEX DAViS NEWS JOURNAL VAHC2 198 By DAVE WIGKAM For the first time m many fans years basketball throughout the area are looking forward to a great 4A tournament this next week at the Special Events Center on the campus of the University of Utah. THE REASON for all the excitement is that for the first time in several years theres no real cut favorite for the tournament. Opinion is that anyone of the sixteen teams in the event could walk away w ith the first place honors In the past years there has always been a top dog entering the event, first there was Brett Vroman and the Bulldogs of Provo, then of late there has been the Danny Vranes and Skyline teams But this year there is no dominant team. No one is undefeated. More importantly no one has conceded the title to anyone else it I t . ft-vrZ'- VJb ,i55 V iirrlf m tLSP9 nin Aff sf"!tl COACH DUKE Reid of Brighton sums up the feelings of the coaches when he stated, "For the first time Ive been involved there is no clear cut favorites. Im excited for the tournament. The team that gets hot will win guess the Bingham club would be considered a favorite, and in our two games with them we lost one tn overtime and the other a one pointer. The teams are all close, should be a great tournament." So Bingham gets a little edge in mentioning as possible winners Yet the Miners haven't been so awesome this 1 CLEARFIELD GALS tough. Highland has the M ke Maxwell show, this is the best guard around He can shoot anytime he crosses and sometimes before Olym pus has a lot of their playets mid-cou- By DAVE W1GHAM None of the coaches really know what the other regions have to offer but most of them admit that when the girls 4A state basketball championships get underway in a week there will be two strong teams from Davis County who both have good shots at the title. LACK OF communication between the coaches, with help from the media, seems to be the reason that no one knows what the rest of the state is doing in girls athletics. Only way the coaches know about the other teams throughout the area is by word of mouth from officials who have worked games in the various regions Region One qualifies five teams automatically into the tournament which will be held in the old gymnasium at Weber State College beginning on Monday, March 13 The sixth place plays a sixth place team from another region for the final berth VIEWMONT, Clearfield, Weber and Layton are in The Roy and Sky View teams will meet m a playoff to determine fifth and sixth The winner goes and the loser gets the playoff with a Salt Lake sc hool In a quick check of the officials the three teams that keep popping up as the odds favorites on in the tour- nament are Viewmont, Orem and Clearfield The Orem club is undefeated, as is Viewmont, while Clearfield has only lost two all year both of those to the Vikings COACH LYNN Dubois of Viewmont doesn't know that much about the Orem crew "An official told us that they have a good big center and a really good guard who shoots exceptionally well and leads the show What could the Orem coach have heard about the two teams from up here View mont could be categorized as having a tall and talented front line with two of the quickest guards in the state Clearfield would be an ex- cellent shooting forward who from anywhere and a great ballhandling guard tan score WITH THEIR two wins over the Falcons, the Viewmont team would have to be considered as the best from Region One The Vikings do everything well They can lun, shoot, play good solid defense and press In the Clearfield games the Vikes got great performances out of their great sophomore Debbie This Asper A little bit of San Francisco can be found at the bedutiful Bratton's Cove in Bountiful" Mon. thru Jot." 1! fi Seafood gfgfj p Kx. THE VIKES are 14 0 through league play and overall, with wins over Davis, Hillcrest and Cyprus besides ihe league opponents They have three strengths, height, shooting and quickness Their Bountiful weakness, who knows? Clearfield is the defending state champion and isnt about to give up the title w ithout a fight Although they dropped two games to the Vikes they still have their heads up and want another shot at them They say one person cant win a game, let alone a championship, but if one person ever could pull off that fete then the Falcons Jackie Beene would be that person SUPERB SEAFOOD & STEAKS fAST, COURTEOUS SERVICE 1385 S. 500 West SENIORS Karen Eckman and Debbie Halford give the Vikes probably the biggest team in the state. Karen is 5 10, Debbie H stands 63 and Debbie A is about 6T. They seem to rule the boards at both ends of the floor Big people are no good if the guards cant get them the ball and the Vikes are blessed with a couple of beauties in seniors Shelly Green and Chris Whetton Both handle the ball well and work it in to the big gals, but if teams sag inside on the Vikes these two are excellent shooters and can hit over them 17-- 0 Jf w Vjl sophomore has the college scouts chomping at the bit, they cant wait to get their hands on her for their program She has an uncanny ability to hit the turn around jump shot and has the height needed to go underneath.
