Fear and loathing in ZCMI from page 80 differences in people which make human relationships so interesting. Before you say Mormons are a fanatical religious sect, find out something about them. Visit Temple Square, read a book or ask a Mormon acquaintance. Then if you want to open your mouth and make some comment, you won't end up with your foot in it. Mormon history is Utah history; the two notions are inseparable. If we are to live in this state, we must know about it. But that is not to say we must accept everything about it. It must be remembered that the Mormons built this state. They carved it out of a desert that the rest of the pioneers in the 1800s shunned because it was barren and isolated. Whatever our reason for coming to Utah in the first place-sch- ool, work, skiing or simply a change of place it must be remembered that we can live here because the Mormons came here. The Mormon influence is impossible to deny. It permeates much of our daily existence. Mormon thought affects the political, social and cultural aspects of Utah life. Learning about Mormons is not going to totally get rid of feelings of alienation and misunderstanding, therefore other MUSICAL THINGS CLOSE suggestions for survival must be brought to attention. One of the best cures for culture shock, according to counselors at the Women's Resource Center, is to make connections with people who share your interests. There are special interest organizations throughout the city which offer great opportunities to meet people. The neighborhood you live in can also have an effect on survival. For example, it would be difficult for an unmarried couple to live in Bountiful. However, the Avenues and the University area are generally liberal areas and inhabited by young people. All the responsibility is not on the newcomer. Mormons, too, must make some effort to understand others. Like most people they make abrupt generalizations about people; imposing their own standards. But to get along we have to accept the differences and see them as part of human experience from which we can learn. It's generally true, Utah is conservative; most of its people value marriage and large families and the majority are strong believers in the Mormon church. It is also true that getting used to the social attitude will be a lot more difficult than getting used to the high altitude. But, with time and open minds, we can all get alongand culture shock will be a lot less -- TOU o GUITARS OSTRINGS o BAND INSTRUMENTS & SUPPLIES O REPAIRS o RECORDERS o BRASS GIFT ITEMS non-Morm- THE WOODS & BRASS SHOP 965 E. 900 S. 521-735- 5 painful. n . dp 1.1 .. i oq qq nJ I qd m 00 11 op WLL THE ?E"AL TOULOUSE -- LAUTfct STAN ft s II rJ JoL MIT' I tU'm TT B.1 .n a n.i2Manu , " ft al go . ..HOT ..-r-; Po-hi.
