Les Brown and his Band of Renown will close out the season on May 9 with a salute to the biggest of the big bands. Featured charts will include those immortalized by Benny Goodman, Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, Artie Shaw, Duke Ellington, Charlie Barnet, Bob Crosby and Glenn Miller. This is a return engagement, Brown having sold out Kingsbury Hall last October with a salute just to Miller. Price, in addition to starring in 25 horror films, is internationally known as an art critic and gourmet cook. He attended Yale University and is an alumnus of the famous Mercury Theatre. Between acting and lecture assignments, he also is an author and serves as a member of the Fine Arts committee for the White House and on the board of trustees for both Scripps College and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Richard Rodgers has collaborated with three of the great lyricists of the last half century, Lorenz Hart, Oscar Hammerstein and Stephen Sondheim. His works will be showcased by The Young Americans, first formed in 1962. They are chosen yearly from a nationwide selection and have no connection with any religious or political movement. Since 1975 they have trained in a musical theatre workshop in northern Michigan. They have appeared on major television shows; toured the United States and a dozen foreign countries, taped three albums and appeared in one feature motion picture and several documentaries on youth. Dizzy Gillespie, in partnership with the legendary Charlie "Bird" Parker, is credited with the invention of bebop in the 1940s. Thoroughly trained, he has been called "one of the jazz wonders of the world" by the Los Angeles Times. Gillespie has played with Cab Calloway, Charlie Barnet, Fletcher Henderson, Earl Hines, Woody Herman and many others. Curtis Institute of Music and, upon Zimbalist's retirement, concluded his formal studies with Ivan Galamian. He won the Merriweather Post Competition in 1969 and made his debut with the National Symphony in Avery Fisher Hall where he was hailed by the New York Times. A frequent guest star with the Cleveland, Los Angeles Philharmonic and Philadelphia orchestras, Heifetz also starred in a nationwide television for CBS entitled Art of the Unaccompanied Violin. He has performed once with the Utah Symphony and was enthusiastically greeted by local patrons and critics. Les Brown, most widely identified with comedian Bob Hope, has traveled with "old ski nose" since 1947. He also has served as musical director for Dean Martin, Steve Allen and other stars. Trained musically at three universities, Brown formed his first band at Duke University in 1937. One of just a half dozen big bands to survive from the 40s, Brown's unit has continued to e play and record his runaway hit "Sentimental Journey" with Doris Day as the 17-pie- all-tim- vocalist. Season tickets for the Prestige Series are now on sale through the DCE Lectures and Concerts office, housed since last year in Kingsbury Hall 210.
