Show 4 PSC The Daily Utah Chronicle Openings 1978 Sixty-Si- x Utes gain $100,000 local boost Six local Chevrolet dealers have pooled their resources and created a program which will funnel 1 100,000 into the University football program. The dealers Duane Brown, Ernie Paulos, Tony Price, Gordon Wilson. Don Page and Frank Streator combined d their monies to fund the project to aid the Ute football team. After each Ute football game, an outstanding offensive and defensive player will be selected by the media panel covering the game. The Salt Lake Chevrolet dealers will honor each of these players by contributing $1,000 in their names to the University athletic scholarship fund, a total of $22,000 for the season. Nearly $30,000 worth of tickets were purchased to be used in conjunction with promotions benefiting Utah football. The six dealers will also provide 20 1979 Chevrolet to the athletic department for use by coaching and administrative personnel. Estimated cost of these cars on a lease program would be $48,000. The dealers will also support the program by sponsoring radio and television programs and other promotion involving Ute football. "It is this kind of team effort which brings campus and community together," said Arnie Ferrin, Univeristy athletic director. "Many times support comes when you're winning rather than when you need it. These six Chevrolet dealers came to us and asked, 'How can we help?' " The executive director for the Chevrolet program is Norm Sheya. Sheya served on the Deseret News sports staff from 1964 to 1969 and was director of promotions and publicity for the University from 1974 to 1978. Duaine Brown gave the most accurate description of the Chevrolet dealers' actions when he said, "Utah is ready for a good football program now! This program, simply, is to help put the Ute football team on the map. We're putting our money where our mouths are." for fall quarter 1 four-phase- 77 classes taught $4 for one or more classes Frank Streator 1800 Hempstead Rd. Lavell Edwards, BYU's head football coach, and the BYU Sports Information Office are turning into quite the pranksters in their dealings with the football Utes. Last year at the Beehive Boot luncheon, Wayne Howard (Ute football coach) quipped that, for all the commotion the Beehive Boot caused, he certainly thought it was ugly. When Edwards addressed the group of writers present, he said, "Well, Wayne, the boot certainly may not be that goodlooking, but I know you would not mind wearing it for a year." At this year's luncheon kicking off the football season, Edwards commented on Howard's thoughtfulness in sending him a new sports coat. He said the reason he and Howard had the same sports coat was that Wayne found a two for one sale in a men's clothing store and send him the second coat. The rivalry between the schools has always been intense in d kidding has developed, every sport. Both coaches taking harmless potshots at each other. The sports information office at BYU is adding a little fuel to the fire. In this year's football brochure, the University is listed as the 1 1th game for the Cougars, accompanied by a picture of coach Wayne Howard. However the name below the picture is Bill Howard. Could this be just an oversight? Did Dave Schultess and his associates (the sports misinformation director and his staff) forget what Howard's first name really was? Or did they do a sloppy job of proofreading? Or is it just one of those intentional-unintentionmistakes to show the respect (or better, lack of respect) they have for the University? In any case, the one name I would not spell wrong in the media guide is that of your arch rival. After all, to spell all the other coaches' homes correctly and just happens to miss one, which just happens to be the head coach of the most heated rivalry in the state, just happens to seem a bit blatant to me. Even though the proofreading crew may have been tired as you can get from reading too much copy and bleary-eyethere is no excuse for blowing it like that. at one sitting, Come on, fella, you can do better than that!
