He has run a 4:07 mile, but is stronger at the longer distances. He placed highest in the World Junior Cross Country Championships in 1977. at the NCAA cross country meet to win honors. Guadarrama was injured during the spring track season, but is healthy now and should have another fine season. Morris had an outstanding track season this past year, placing third in the British an Swansea, Wales, provides another member of this year's team, Byron Davies, who was one of the top j unior cross-countr- i unner y in Britain last year. Davies and Kevin Glastonbury of Cardiff, Wales, are both freshmen although they ran for the University during the 1978 track season. Glaston- bury had many excellent races last spring, highlighted by his 3:44 1,500 meter time, which is roughly equivalent to a 4:01 mile. Colin Szwed, Hurley, England is one of the finest in the young world today. As a his 1:47.7 was just shy of p a world record, and this season he ran well enough to be selected for England's team for the half-mile- rs age-grou- Commonwealth Games. Szwed's cross-countr- y capabilities are yet to be tested, although he has run a good 1,5000 meter time. JUDO UNIFORMS BOOKS Yet another outstanding freshman is John Gerhardt. Costa Mesa. Calif. Last year Gerhardt was a prep in cross country and ran a 4:12 mile before being injured. He, too. is healthy now and should be a fine addition to the team. Other team members with strong chances of making the top seven are Ron Day and Brian Zarkou, who both V:-- an y Vj returned from missions. They were recently outstanding high school distance runners at Olympus High School. Randy Rosen, Clumbia Station, Ohio, was a letterman a year ago and is greatly improved. Scott Sanchez, David Brown and Dan Davey are all local Octavio Guadarrama runners and recently graduated prep stars. A look at this year's Western Athletic Conference (WAC) race is a look at the nation's best. Track and Field News has suggested that the WAC is the strongest distance conference in the country from top to bottom. UTEP and Wyoming appear the favorites to capture two of the precious three team spots allowed the District Seven area. The outlook for the University is good. The key to the team's succ ess seems to be how closely the third, fourth and fifth runners can be to Guadarrama and Morris. This, without question, will be a most competitive and exciting year for the harrier sport in the WAC. Kevin Glastonbury Metric equivalent of 4:01 last year i |
