Show Page The Daily Utah Chronicle Openings 1978 Women's athletics from page 51 receive as much spectator support as the men's. "We get less exposure," Blundell said. "And this is a commuter campus, so it's more difficult to get people to stay around after class. But we have had good response from the people who do come and I think the following is growing." Discrimination isn't a problem at the University, Blundell said. There are equal numbers of scholar-ship- s offered to women and men. About 75 women will receive athletic scholarships this year. The availability of scholarships is a main reason for the increase in. women athletes. "There is more encouragement for young girls to enter sports now," Blundell said. "More women are going abuses in men's recruiting we've seen in some schools." Sports have been painted as slightly less than intellectual for either sex, and unfeminine for women. Blundell called both stereotypes undeserved. 'Ten years ago a father may not have wanted his daughter to go into sports because it was unfeminine. But now, athletics may put her through school. Femininity is a state of mind. Female athletes are both athletes and women," she said. The dumb jock label doesn't apply either, Blundell said. "You just can't go through four years of school and graduate, and be stupid. The physical education curriculum isn't jus? difficult, like anatomy, sports psychology and medicine. Anytime someone is good at something, like sports, we tend to think it's easy," she said. m FIRM KING SIZE nnnn jo n r, 4C 3 pc. set V !! Recruitment procedures mark the main difference between men's and women's athletics. The Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) sets the guidelines which state a coach cannot personally contact an athlete. This isn't true for male athletes. Recruitment of women must be done by mail or through her coach. "It's mainly for the protection of the athlete Blundell uw (men's and women's athletics) get along very well. This may not be the case at all universities. I don't want to paint a glossy picture, but everybody around here seems to like each other." ng "They thrash this rule over each year at the AIAW.
