Knowing the library will save time and tempers. She stressed that students shouldn't be afraid to ask the staff for help because the staff is paid for that purpose. "There is no reason to assume you are born with the ability to use a research library. The staff often knows of sources, such as abstracts and special indices, that a patron would never think of," she said. At the beginning of each quarter the library offers organized tours. The tours run throughout the day and start at the General Reference desk, which also has tours available. The tours take about one self-guide- d hour. Two library classes are also offered. One is d class, General Studies 101, in which the student purchases a workbook and goes through the assignments on his own. The second class, Educational Systems and Learning Resources 102, is taught in a classroom. Both classes are designed to teach students how to use the library efficiently. If a student can not locate a book on the shelves, it can usually be tracked down by the circulation staff by running the call number through the computer. If the it computer lists the book as checked-out- , will tell when the book is due and can place the book on hold. Dusenbury said faculty and graduate students are permitted to check out books for an entire quarter. But, she added, that if an undergraduate wants such a book, the library will ask the faculty member or graduate student to return to book as soon as possible. Loan program enables The a student to request books from libraries all over the world. Dusenbury said students should plan far in advance if they wish to use this service. There is a charge for this service depending on mailing or other costs. a ow the Plant Works.
