FALL QUARTER Do dirty words cause damage? Rolling Stone REMEMBER INKLEY'S magazine offers $5,000 ALL YOUR PHOTOGRAPHIC FOR for documented proof Rolling Stone magazine recently announced that it will pay $5,000 for documented proof that certain "filthy words" are damaging to a person's physical, mental or spiritual health. This unprecedented offer is being made in response to the recent Supreme Court decision which upholds a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) ruling against the broadcasting of words which the FCC considers indecent. In an editorial, Rolling Stone "agrees that government has an obligation to protect children in truly harmful situations where (they) lack the strength, wisdom or guidance to protect themselves. But who is going to protect them from a Supreme Court that teaches them to be ashamed of their natural bodies and their natural language. ..that stunts their growth by legally sanctioning radio and TV censorship . . .that says it's moral and virtuous to act one way in private and lie about it in public or the media." However, Rolling Stone is willing to concede that "maybe words really are as dangerous as sticks and stones." The magazine "will pay $5,000 for the. first piece of valid, documented proof that any of the 10 'filthy words' in and of themselves have caused demonstrable physical, mental or spiritual damage. The damage must have occurred in this country in the last five yearsand must be the result of the word itself, not an indignant reaction to an insult." Rolling Stone must have all documented evidence in hand by October 31. To find out what the "unutterable ten" words are or to speak with David Felton, representative of the magazine's editorial board, on this subject contact Audrey Strahl or Dianne Ripley in the publicity department, (212) 350-120- 3.
