San Diego State was a distant second and Colorado State third. Utah was named the "team which most changed the media's opinion in a positive manner," receiving 11 votes. UTEP got four New Mexico three and one-haland one-halSan Diego State 2 and CSU 1. Marc Wilson, BYU's record-settin- g quarterback, and Mike Bell, CSU's defensive tackle, were expected to near-unanimo- us first-plac- f, f, All-Ameri- ca be the outstanding offensive and defensive players, respectively, in 1978. The Cougars, who tied for the WAC title the past tow seasons, totaled 158 points e awarded for a vote, six points for a second-plac- e vote, etc. first-plac- San Diego State, new to the WAC this fall, received two first-plac- e nods and 121 points while CSU had 111.5 points. New Mexico received the remaining e vote and 86 points for fourth place. Wyoming finished fifth in the voting with 79.5 points, followed by Utah with 69 and Texas-E- l Paso with 23. first-plac- Wilson was named on 10 ballots, edging New Mexico running back Mike Williams, who had nine votes. Wyoming running back Myron X'ide lan received the other three votes. Bell gathered 19 votes, and Wyoming linebacker Ken Fanetti got the other three. The media also predicted that Keith Lee, CSU quarterback, and Jeff Lyall, Utah defensive end, would be the top rookies. Lee and Lyall each received six votes.
