Bodie, owner and operator of The Grab Bag. "My store is a reaction against the aggressive marketing that is so popular today, I'm even a little wary of this article, it's free isn't it?" When I finally tracked down The Grab Bag whereabouts, Bodie was operating out of an abandoned mining tunnel under Main St. "Ingenious isn't it, this location is close to the busiest section of town, yet isn't as obvious as those other stores," stated Bodie. "Besides finding a store is half the fun of shopping," says Bodie. "so you need a metal detector and a flashlight to find my place, big deal." The items found in The Grab Bag run the gamut, from hard-to-find articles, to everyday pieces. "I try to vary the mix to insure mystery," says Bodie. The average ticket price is subject to change, but Bodie will let the customer guess, then say if they are 'hot' or 'cold. "Just the other day I had a tourist wander in looking for a bathroom, I was able to get 15 bucks for directions," boasts Bodie. "I can tell you of some of my other great deals but they will have to be off-the-record." Bodie plans to vary the location of his store to increase demand. "It's basic economics, man, decrease supply, and the demand increases. The way I figure it, in five years I'll be hugebut in a subtle way of course." The Grab Bag also deals in acquisition, the store has it's own purchasing agent but declined to divulge the name. "Heshe has many years of experience," says Bodie,"but if people know that heshe is from my prestigious outlet they will try to hike the purchase price, it's cutthroat man." Bodie's college experience taught him what not lo do in marketing, "all those in-your-face marketing techniques just left me cold, I wanted to do something a little more organic." "Business has been great, this revolutionary approach has had a better than expected response," enthuses Bodie,"besides, what did you expect me to say, biz has been crappy?" If a little mysterious atmosphere is what you are looking for The Grab Bag is the place for you. (If you can find it, that is.) if lij'" 11 I - ' I '' by TOM CRAM Record guest writer Richard Dudley and Craig Masters have teamed up to open The Resort Realty Group located on 1030 Park Avenue.
