This season of "Love and Legend" is filled with the classic and romantic ballets that offer the passion and laughter of the audiences' favorite love stories. The season consists of a new full-length full-length Ballet West premiere, plus three returning favorites and the traditional holiday production of The Nutcracker. , "As we complete a tremendously successful year, we salute the continued invaluable support of our subscribers," asserts John Hart, Artistic Director of Ballet West "Now we invite you to enjoy each of these 93-94 season full-length ballets of legendary romances. From the fairy tale , , Sleeping Beauty to the passionate but tragic The Lady of The Camellias, each ballet represents the universal appeal of love and legend." Sleeping Beauty, Sept. 17-25 . Ballet West's Sleeping Beauty, taken from the famous Perrault fiction and choreographed by Marius Petipa, is a mirror of 19th century imperial splendor. With the melodious music of Peter Tchaikovsky and enchanting sets and costumes by Peter Cazalet, it has been described by the Washinqton Post as, "an almost picture-perfect fairy tale." When last performed by Ballet West in January of 1991, Sleeping Beauty played to added performances and sold out houses. Giselle, with Paul Taylor's Company 'B' Oct. 29-Nov. 6 Giselle, a haunting story of tragic love and madness, was first choreographed in 1841 by Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot for a rising young ballerina, Carlotta Grisi. This gripping ballet, with music by Adolphe Adam, a popular 19th century composer, is the oldest ballet in continuous performance and considered the greatest dramatic role for the New exhibits featured at Kimball galleries Kimball Art Center will present exhibits featuring painter Richard Murray in the Main Gallery and the Utah Association of Woodturners in the Badami Gallery beginning April 4 and continuing through April 28. Richard Murray, with his collection, "Life Studies," focuses his efforts on painting animals. "These animals are the closest I've come to being content with my own style," he said. Murray has experimented with many styles of painting, sometimes changing his style each year. His life size paintings of domestic and wild animals present an engaging ' display of his distinctive style. In acknowledgement of the 1993 Year of American Craft, the Utah Woodturners Association demonstrate the process of making a round piece of wood from a square one. The process involves rotating the wood on a lathe, while cutting and shaping the wood with jags! The romantic sets were designed for Ballet West by Peter Cazalet, renowned for his period work. The costumes are by David Heuvel. As an added treat for our Ballet West audiences, Giselle will be performed with Paul Taylor's energetic and light-hearted but poignant Company 'B'. With the dance performed to the original recordings selections of the Andrews Sisters, and the authentic '40s costumes by Santo Loquasto, Company 'B' will have the audience toe-tapping in time to the music. The Nutcracker, Dec. 13-31 December 13, Ballet West opens their most popular production ever, The Nutcracker. More than 100 years old, The Nutcracker continues as the holiday tradition with all the grandeur and magic that captured hearts over a century ago. The magical story of young Clara and her nutcracker transformed into a prince delights the young and takes the more mature back to the days when dreams still came true. Ballet West's The Nutcracker, choreographed by Willam Christensen to Tchaikovsky's beloved score and complimented by Ariel Ballifs set and costumes, includes aspiring young dancer students from the community. Cinderella, Feb. 10-19 Ballet West's Cinderella offers the enchanting innocence of the classic fairy tale while adding humorous nuances. With choreography by Ben Stevenson and music by Sergei Prokofiev, the well known and much loved story of rags to riches, of transformation from a poor and unloved kitchen maid to a princess, has a firm hold on the imagination of children and adults alike. Brought to life by the elaborate and superb set and costumes of English designer David Walker, whose work is also seen in Ballet West's production of The Dream, the ball at the palace, the magical stagecoach, the fairy godmother and the wedding are a hand-held tool as it spins, creating a useful object The two most common types of woodturnings are spindles (furniture parts and candlesticks) and containers (plates, bowls, lidded boxes and vases). An opening reception for the artists will take place on Sunday, April 4, from 3-5 p.m. Gallery Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday. Due to the overwhelming response and sold out houses for all performances of Cinderella in 1992, Ballet West has included three additional special event performances of Cinderella in 1994. The Lady of the Camellias, Apr. 15-23 Highlighting the season is the premiere of The Lady of The Camellias, a full-length ballet inspired by the same great love story as the opera, La Traviata, and the film, Camille. This new ballet, an historic collaboration between Ballet West and Ballet Florida, was conceived by Norbert Vesak and his creative associate, Robert-Glay Robert-Glay de la Rose. Tragically, the production was halted by Vesak's untimely death. In 1992, Val Caniparoli was invited to choreograph the complete work, following Vesak's concept With Caniparoli's contemporary choreography, set to the music of Frederick Chopin and enhanced by the set and costumes of Robert-Glay Robert-Glay de la Rose, the ballet unfolds into a drama of passion and hope., with a price to pay. Renewal notices to current subscribers are now being mailed; renewal deadline is May 14. New subscription orders for season tickets will be taken by the Ballet West Subscriber Service Department beginning March 29. New subscriber seats are assigned after the subscription renewal deadline, and will be placed in the order that they are received. Subscription prices for this exciting season of all full-length ballets begin at just $27, and range to $200, for up to a 30 percent discount over single ticket prices. There is no increase in season ticket prices this year and all season subscribers may pre-order their 1993 Nutcracker tickets. Apply for photo exhibit The 1993 Open Photography I Exhibition is open to all photographers. Only works of photography will be accepted. Photographers may submit a maximum of three entries of original work completed within the last year. Any photographs which have been previously exhibited at the Kimball Art Center are not eligible. April 20, 1993 is the deadline to receive slide entries to be juried. Once the Juror has completed selecting slide entries during the ) pre-jury process, photographers will be notified. Actual works of photography selected during pre- . jury will be due at the Kimball Art Center by April 28, 1993 for the Final Jury. The exhibition is scheduled to open May 2, 1993 and run through June 2, 1993. Joe Marotta, Chairman of the Art Department at the University of Utah, will serve as Juror. Five photographs will be selected by the Juror to be designated as Jurors awards. The Kimball Art Center's cash awards of$300,$100and$100willbe selected from among the five Juror's Awards.
