Show afluncaattfldDim Thursday, April 1. 1993 P Page A10 The Park Record D Section A Smith enjoys the game of school and looks forward to BYU by ANDREA MATHER Record staff writer A few days after the state Academic Decathlon contest in St George, Cori Smith found herself in Provo being grilled for three days by a group of Brigham Young University Ph.D.s. "I have never had my brain picked in that intense of a fashion," says the Park City High School senior. This is the same student who just beat out other top students in the Academic Decathlon to be named Utah's top scholar in the contest that past weekend. She also is a finalist for the National Merit Scholarship Program. Cori was at BYU with 31 other women trying out for the prestigious Ezra Taft Benson scholarship. The 12 recipients receive a tuition and a half scholarship for four years as well as the other perks, she says. The best part of the experience was meeting the other students. They were "brilliant . . . easy to talk to . . . friendly" and open to sharing the personal lives, Cori says. The women were not competing with one another but operated more like a team offering support in many forms including hugs. The soft-spoken young woman started filling out applications for Harvard, Vassar, Williams but never finished them. BYU offers an excellent undergraduate education and has the atmosphere she wants, she says. Her parents, Jeff and Joyce, are also alumni of the school. She sees a couple of options for a future career either as a surgeon, science researcher or business-person. business-person. The oldest of four children, Cori, is looking forward to new challenges. "I'm ready for something different; I've been in high school for four years. I've pretty well mastered that game," she says. Viewing challenges as a game makes it easier, she says. Part of Cori's game plan is setting goals. Her first year on the Academic Decathlon team she decided to aim for the state's best scholar award. Last year she finished fourth overall, she says. Last year, she "blundered through" the work but this year she had a better sense of how to tackle the academic contest. She studied and worried more this year. She walked out of the test knowing she gave it her all and that was a type of winning. "For me when I have done my best is the greatest feeling." , Until her name was announced, Cori assumed her teammate Jesse Davis won the state scholar award. (He came in second.) The team has taught her to not be too competitive and take the fun out of it all, she says. At the end of this week exams will be out of the way and Cori will be psyching herself up for April 22, the date the team heads for the national Academic Decathlon in Phoenix. "I'm going to do the work and read everything over. Then relax, go in (to the contest) and have fun. I know it is all in my head ... I just have to . . . let it all out." Cori Smith was named Utah's top scholar at the Academic Decathlon. What's for Forum school lunch? slated Fifth-grade Westward Ho! Show slated Park City School District lunch menu for April 1-2.
