At a special press conference held at the Town Lift (which was covered in layers of raspberry pink chiffon and lemon yellow taffeta) Charnes announced that famed fabric artist Cristo would be draping a special Park City building. "At the Film Festival last year there was a terrific documentary about his work. We saw how he has draped islands, bridges, fences, and even canals in Venice. He came to Park City during the festival, listened to local concerns and decided he could make a real statement here. So, for the first time ever, Cristo will drape a building that isn't even built yet-the Town Lift project." Charnes admitted it would expensive and complicated but said the group had received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and a private donation from a citizens group led by a former City Manager who now works in Oregon. "Cristo said the community can't yet comprehend the enormity of the project but once the entire area is swathed in fabric (he is leaning toward plaid flannel but is also said to have entertained striped sailcloth) then the public will see just how big and tall and wide this baby really will be." During the construction phase of the art work traffic will be routed at Carl Winters up Woodside and to Daly and then over to Hillside and down Marsac. "That will also let residents start to get a sense of what the real construction will do to traffic patterns." Charnes said the Today Show and Good Morning America have already expressed an interest in filming their shows from the site and Geraldo has promised to unveil the real 1982 legal agreement about the project which city officials thought was destroyed years ago. "It will be a '60s kind of happening but tailored for the '90s," said Charnes. "Art and politics. It's just so Park City." AT |
