Show The Park Record Section B On and off the hill. ..still crazy after all these years Page B8 D Thursday, April 1 1993 by ALEX WELLS Record Reporter It's three o'clock on a Wednesday afternoon, and Hans Olmer is at it again. The town's wackiest German is swinging from a ceiling fan at the Alamo, going around and around, his feet skimming just above the heads of several bar patrons. Park City Profile Swing from fan. Meet pretty girls." Since arriving in Park City from Germany two years ago, Olmer has become a legend of sorts in town. Not only does he swing from ceiling fans, he's the only person in c - Li-.' f . i - -Ft," v Hans Olmer lights the torch. Let the barbecue begin. Suddenly he lets go of the fan and is thrown sideways through the air, eventually landing on a table and sending pitchers of beer and mugs flying in a great tidal wave of foam. "Is fun, no?" says Olmer with a crooked grin, holding his now-sopped now-sopped shirt out to let the beer drip off it. "I have good time here. Ski. town who can suck up beer through a straw placed in his nose. "I learn that one from my grandfather in Alps," he explains. "You must breath through mouth, drink through nose. No laugh. Laugh with beer in nose killed my great-great grandfather." On the slopes Olmer has been as singular as he is in the bar room. He is by most accounts the maddest skier in Park City, having jumped off cliffs more than 100 feet high. He's easy to spot, with yellow lightning bolts emblazoned on the sides of his blue one-piece suit and his long blond hair flying. Failed ski instructor Olmer originally came to Park City from his native Alps as part of a ski instructor-exchange program, but his flamboyant style met with disfavor in the local ski school. In fact, Olmer was fired from the ski school after leading an intermediate class off a series of 30-foot 30-foot cliffs in the area's experts-only experts-only area. " think they make war on ski hill. So I throw rock." "I say to class, 'You want learn to ski, we learn right now by make jump here,"' he recalls. "American ski school want me teach pretty hand movements, want everyone ski like girl bird, like sparrow. But I say we find out real skiers right away by jump off cliff." After losing his job with the ski school, Olmer quickly landed a job as a van driver. B ut that job soon ended, when Olmer was clocked by local police going 140 m.p.h. on Deer Valley Drive. "I say to Police, 'Is Autobahn, no?' We make good time on Autobahn." Confusion understandable Olmer's confusion is understandable. Raised by Brewers in a small hamlet in the Alps, Olmer had never left Germany before he made the German National Ski Team at age 1 8. : What goes up, must come down....real fast. On his first trip to a major ski area, he threw a rock through the window of a Snow Cat, which he had mistaken for an armored personnel carrier. "I ask what orange beast do drive on good snow," he recalls. "I think they make war on ski hill. So I throw rock." Later, when he traveled abroad for the first time, Olmer crashed a helicopter into a pond moments after winning a World Cup race. "I take chopper for spin after win big race. Was in air force once. But forgot how to fly." That ended Olmer's stint on the national team, and prompted his trip to America. Now his only racing is in the Town Race Series, where he leads Pro-class skiers Jesse Hunt and Bill Skinner in the race for the season title.
