Show Page B1 0 H Thursday, April 1, 1993 The Park Record D Section B Performers wanted by State Fair organizers The 1993 Utah State Fair is fast approaching, running September 9 thru 19. Talented Utah performers will fill the stages and grounds with "Music In The Air," our 1993 theme. The Fair organizers are looking for bands of all types, dancing groups, doggers, quartets, choruses, jugglers, clowns, novelty acts, family performing groups, ethnic groups, comic acts, all performing arts groups, school musical groups, and individuals to perform at the fair. This year the fair is showcasing "ethnic" groups who make such an invaluable contribution to the cultural scene of Utah. Groups from all races and cultures are encouraged to apply for consideration. Include enough pertinent information concerning your presentation to be seriously considered. If you or your group have not performed at the Utah State Fair in the past two years it will be necessary for you to submit a video (VHS) showing your talent presentation (not to exceed 15 minutes on tape). After inquiries are received, you will be sent an official application form. Hush, you li'l ski bum, Don'tcha cry. -Zafod Fiction, poetry and painting at City Art City Art will present Franklin Fisher reading fiction, Sandy Anderson reading poetry, and an art exhibit by Valentina Vaynshteyn, on Thursday, April 1, at the Mount Tabor Lutheran Church, 175 South 700 East The program, which begins at 8 p.m, will be followed by an open reading. It is open and free to the public, although donations are gratefully accepted. City Art will also present a poetry workshop by Anderson on Saturday, April 3, from 10 a.m.-l p.m. It takes place at 3490 South 3650 East There is a $10 workshop enrollment fee, and one can register at any City Art function, or by calling 277-1510. The workshop will consist of writing exercises, and analysis of manuscripts by participants. Franklin Fisher's novel, Bones, was published in 1991 by the University of Utah Press. He has published short stories in Iowa Review, Carolina Quarterly, Great River Review, Confrontation, and he has a story coining out in the next issue of American Literary Review. Sandy Anderson has been involved in organizing and giving It's A poetry readings and workshops since 1965. She was a founding member of Salt Lake Younger Poets in the sixties, Word Affair in the seventies and eighties, and City Art in the nineties. She has served as poetry coordinator for the Utah Arts Festival, and poetry consultant to the Salt Lake Arts Council. Artist Valentina Vaynshteyn was born in Russia in 1950, and immigrated to the U.S. in 1988. Although she and her husband (artist Vladimir Vayshteyn) were "officially educated" Russian artists, they came of age to the Park Record ...... . 1 . - Vr l COW I underground in the latter years of communist Russia. They were educated in "social realism," then broke out in their own voices. Valentina says that "Nature is the influence of the voice," and that, "Painting is my entire life, I can't live without drawing...every day I have to draw." She has an ongoing show at the Blue Boutique, and had a show at the Art Access Gallery in Dec. 1992.
