Plans to restock wolves in Yellowstone National Park will continue unhindered, said federal officials. That's despite confirmation that an animal shot south of the park last fall was a pure-bred wolf. DNA samples taken from the wolf carcass matched those of gray wolves living near Missoula, Mont, and were similar to genetic samples of four other gray wolves, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service spokeswoman Sharon Rose said last week. That means the wolf shot in the Teton Wilderness Sept. 30 likely migrated from western Montana, she said, though it is impossible to say when that might have occurred. Wolves are thought to have been extinct in the Yellowstone area since the 1930s. "It shows that wolves are capable of getting to Yellowstone from Montana," said Steve Fritts, the agency's coordinator of wolf recovery in Montana. But, he added: "It does not mean that recovery is imminent whatsoever." The agency's study of recovery alternatives, including reintroduction, will go ahead unabated. That study, or environmental impact statement that T"ludes the agency's recommer.d:uon, should be released in June. If a wolf population has .reached Yellowstone naturally, it would render illegal an "experimental, nonessential" non-essential" population designation. That designation, an option being considered if the Fish and Wildlife Service transplants wolves, would allow park managers to kill those animals that harass or kill livestock. Wolves now are protected under the Endangered Species Ac, which prohibits killing them except in limited cases. That protection would extend to a wolf population, if one is proven to exist naturally in Yellowstone. Ctv. ,.. off from the airport in his single engine Piper Malibu at approximately 6:30 a.m. While Wilson and his three passengers walked away from the crash, one of the three passengers, Dennis Wheeler, was hospitalized with internal injuries later that day. i The names of the other passengers could not be obtained by press time. Wheeler is the building inspector for the city of Ketchum. He was not accepting phone calls at the hospital. Kirtley said the accident occurred after the left wing tip and landing gear of Wilson's plane struck a snowbank, tearing the wing almost completely from the aircraft and flipping it over onto its back. This is the second plane crash in which Wilson has been involved in the last four months. Wilson was piloting a plane that crashed while attempting to land at the Twin Falls-Sun Valley Regional Airport Dec. 11. In that incident, Wilson crashed after landing in a mud field a mile-and a-half short of the runway in heavy fog. Wilson was uninjured in that accident. Govt, disappoints many by failing to pass reform bills Before you begin researching to decide, whether to re-elect a state legislator, stop. You won't find a record of how they voted each time on the floor of the Senate or House. Recorded roll call votes are required only on the third and final reading of a bill, making it impossible to track a legislator's position as legislation evolves. , . Apparently legislators, including one from Teton County, want to keep those they represent in the dark. Again during the recently concluded legislative session, they killed efforts to install electronic voting systems in both chambers. Their inaction was one of many that outraged, but hardly surprised, individuals and groups supporting a list of so-called "good government" bills. The Equality State Policy Center, a coalition of groups like the American Civil Liberties Union and the AFL-CIO, AFL-CIO, gave the legislature an "F" for its failure to enact the reform bills. They dealt with electronic voting, open meetin , conflict of interest, lobbyist disclosure and early campaign finance report, to name a few. All met their demise in various ways, leaving many frustrated and disillusioned. "These were bills that people have every right to expect," said June Rain, executive director of the Cheyenne-based Wyoming Wildlife Federation. "These.were some jbills that would make you wonder how people could show their faces after they voted it down." pi55 Four walk away from Friedman plane crash A plane that crashed while taking off from Friedman Memorial Airport recently closed the airfield for three-and a-half hours. According to Idaho State Police Trooper Ross Kirtley, the crash occurred just as Sun Valley resident and City Council Member David Wilson was taking Jackson Chamber group to urge ban on chain stores Some members of the Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce will tell Jackson town officials they should ban chain stores to save Jackson from being bought up by outsiders, . , . .. , Jackson Trading Co. owner John Love, a longtime Jackson businessman, said the suggestion is "very protectionist" but he also thinks it's warranted. "We're here and we want to protect what we have," Love said of the attitude of many local business people who fear being shut out by large chains, and who also don't like the effect outside ownership has on Jackson. One Jackson councilman said he's sympathetic with the feeling, but dubious about the practicality of banning chains. But Love said the move is necessary to preserve Jackson character. "Ownership of the Town Square is going out of town," he said.' "A select number of very wealthy real estate developers are buying up real estate around the Square and redeveloping it and putting it out to auction to the highest bidder." i. . i I 1 Iv - F---- 1 I : I J- ; " A !
