Show Holiday season introduced i NORTH SALT LAKE--Members of the Orchard 1 1th Ward in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints were given a special introduction to the holiday season on Sunday with a presentation presen-tation by members of the South Davis Mutual for the Handicapped. Young men's president Jack Bailey introduced the group to the congregation by explaining the history of the organization which began in 1971 as a result of the efforts of local mothers. The group consists of members age 12 to "112 if they want to join," he said. The current group includes members age 12 to 52. "My problem is not how I look, but how you see me," is the message Bailey wants the students to understand. He instructed the congregation to "listen with your hearts," to receive the full message of the performers, some of whom spoke with difficulty. The program began with a story from Ann Holt, a young member of the mutual. With the help of a visual vis-ual aid, she told the story of a highly emotional turkey who through the help of his friends was able to learn to control his anger. Holt was followed by Kevin Lloyd, a 27-year-old member who recited the words of a hymn. The entire mutual then sang, and signed the song "In This Very Room." The message of the song is one the members of the mutual want others to understand. The chorus sang, "In this very room there's quite enough love for one like me. And in this very room there's quite enough joy for one like me. And there's quite enough hope and quite enough power to chase away any gloom. For Jesus, Lord Jesus is in this very room." "Many of the kids have not found this kind of love in the community. com-munity. Some parents have told me stories that are very sad," said Bailey. t Keynote speaker for the meeting J was Carl Pope, who is the assistant scout master in the Young Men's program. Pope told the congrega- tion that as a teacher he works with gifted children each day. J "My experience with these ' young people has taught me that 1 they too are gifted. We all have ' handicaps. Some are not as visible as others," Pope said. He explained that at his school there is a sign which reads, "This life is a test. If this were a real life you would be told where to go and what to do. " i "I believe that these special peo- I pie have not been sent here to be i tested, but rather to test the love and , compassion of their fellow men," ; Pope said. Pope said many of the members have been able to earn their Eagle rank and are now teaching in the mutual. "Both Dave Hudson and Kerry Mower have graduated and are now helping me," said Pope. Pope's remarks were followed by a solo from John Duce, who sang "Let There Be Peace on Earth." The congregation was moved by the courage of the young woman who sang the first verse of the closing clos-ing song, "I Am a Child of God." Linda Mickelson, with the help of her father John, struggled to sing the words of the well known hymn. The group which consists of approximately ap-proximately 35 men and 35 women is in great demand Members of the . group perform on a regular basis at : many functions. J "These kids are wonderful, and : we want everyone to know it," said : Bailey. He and the Young Women's president Carol Hutchins, along with many other leaders, meet with the mutual each week. The meetings are held at the Bountiful 10th and 27th chapel at 1145 N. 200 E., Bountiful on Thursday at 7:15 p.m. |
