Show Ladder truck to be discussed By PAUL CHALLIS BOUKTIFUL Federal funding to replace the Bountiful Fire Department's aging ladder truck will be the focus of a public hearing at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, the City Council said. At issue was whether to apply for a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) to fund the new fire truck, or to dip into the local budget, council members said at their Nov. 21 meeting. The federal CDBG funds would used in conjunction with the South Davis Fire District, which would share in purchasing the aerial ladder truck. The cost would be divided among Bountiful and the district-served district-served cities of Centerville, Woods Cross, West Bountiful and North Salt Lake. City Manager Tom Hardy said that under current codes high rise buildings cannot be constructed in Bountiful unless an updated ladder truck is included the Fire Department's Depart-ment's fleet of vehicles. The ladder truck currently in service ser-vice is 24 years old and is wearing out. Hardy said. If a major fire broke out while the old truck was out of service. Bountiful would have to call Layton or Salt Lake City for help. To be eligible for a block grant, the applicant must show the money would be used to benefit low- to moderate-income families, aid in the prevention or elimination of slums, or meet a pressing public safety need. Bountiful last received a federal block grant in 1986 to help in designing the refurbished Main Street. ! Hardy said the city has some real concerns about the reliability of the i old fire truck and the metal is beginning to wear out. Fire Chief Jerry Lemmon said the truck is 'just over the hill." Parts have to specially made for the truck and ordered, he said. If Bountiful is unsuccessful in i SEE TRIJCK PG. A-2 Truck CONT. FROM PG.A-1 getting CDBG funding for a new fire truck, the city would have to take the money from the general fund, which would burden taxpayers tax-payers and would be a last resort effort, Hardy said. Other issues on the council's Wednesday agenda include: a review of an appeal of the Forest Service's decision to allow two pipelines to pass through south . - Davis County; a public hearing to P consider whether to suspend or f revoke a beer license to the Texaco service station and market at 280 I W. 500 South; consider approval of ! a utility easement along the west j side of Washington Park; approval for participation in the Community Rating System for the National Flood Insurance Program. |
