Storage at 463 S. Main in Bountiful has 72-hour kits. Business has been brisk there since the San Francisco earthquake. Not only reports of earthquakes ear-thquakes but other events like a big drop in the stock market also get people interested ir. being prepared says the owner of Safeguard, Barry Hughes. Hughes has been in the food storage business for almost three years. His interest in the business started when his family decided to get an emergency supply together and found it was not that easy to do. Hughes decided to buy all the pieces and assemble his own kits for retail sale. There are 20 manufacturers who supply items for the kits. The Safeguard 72-Hour Kits are designed to provide protection from the time a disaster happens until the time local and national help can come to an area. The kit provides all the essentials of food, shelter, heat, light first aid, sanitation and communication. Each kit is lightweight and portable. The 70 items in the heavy-duty nylon pack weigh only about 24 pounds. While the kit is for two people, additional items can be purchased to supply larger families. For shelter the deluxe kit has four polarshield emergency blankets, four hand and body warmers and a tube tent There is also a stove and solid fuel tablets to use in the stove. Also included is a first aid kit with gauze bandages, cleansing soap, scissors, and essential first-aid instructions. Food includes 12 meals ready to eat that have a seven to ten-year storage life. A cookset, utensils, hot chocolate mix and freeze dried fruit packages are also included. The basic kit starts at $59.95 and goes up to $169 for a deluxe kit Individual items are also available at Safeguard to replenish or add to any kit. Safeguard Food Storage is open until 6 p.m. Monday Mon-day through Saturday. |
