Show Vater pollution fakes fish toll An estimated 18.4 million fish died in 1964 as a result of water pollution, according to a report released by the Public Health Service, U.S. Department Depart-ment of Health, Education and Welfare. Industrial pollution killed 12.7 million fish and represents the largest cause of the fish deaths. Municipal wastes were blamed for killing 4.1 million fish, toxic substances from agricultural ag-ricultural operations were noted no-ted as the cause of 1.5 million fish deaths. The Public Health Service received re-ceived 485 offcial reports of pollution-caused fish kills dur-iing dur-iing the year from 40 states. The majority of fish killed, approximately 85, is what is considered nongame or trash fish. Over half of the fish klls and two-thirds of the fish killed were reported in the July through September period.
