Bennett, R-TJtah, today co-sponsored an amendment to the Johnson Administration housing hill strinking out the rent subsidy section calling that portion of the bill a foolish, incredible and radical approach. The amendment was offered by Sen. Bennett and Sen. John G. Tower (R-Texas) during Senate debate on the 1965 Housing Bill which was taken up today. I don't think Utah's citizens or Americans anywhere earn-oing earn-oing some $6,000 a year are prepared to start paying the rent of someone who receives $9,000 a year, Sen. Bennett said. If the Administration's Housing Bill is passed by Congress Con-gress they will do just that." The Utahn said, "I do not see how anyone from Utah can possibly vote for this rent subsidy sub-sidy program in the light of the many, many vacant homes which now exist In the state as result of missle plant and other layoffs. This bill would create even more vacancies and would merely compete with the vacancies which now exist. The Utah Republican pointed out that under the plan we are going to commit Americans who will be wage earners in the 21st century to pay for someone else's rent. He sand the proposal would permit a family with an income in-come of about $250 a month (3,000 annually) to live in a $100 a month apartment and pay rent of only $62.50 a month (one fourth of income) with the taxpayers providng the difference of $37.50 a month. |
