Show Little League baseball brings exciting action CEDAR CITY The Little League Baseball season began last week after getting off to a false start with rained out games on Monday, and there was plenty of exciting ex-citing action in both Cedar City leagues. Both American and National Leagues have a week of play under their belts and are planning for a long season since both leagues now field 10 teams. League presidents Greg Nielson and Kimball Kim-ball Weaver indicate that 10 teams make for a long and cumbersome season, but they are trying to see that as many young people as possible get to play Little League. National League It was Elks 11 and Ron's 8 in action early in the week as Cody Bulloch ' went the distance for the winners. Jason Mitchell led the Elk's scoring effort with a home run and Adams doubled. Gilbert doubled for Ron's. Rolling Rubber squeaked by Garden Park 7-6 with Layne Fullmer and Mike Barrick on the mound. Fullmer also doubled. Throwing the ball for Garden Park were Mike Blackburn and Kim Blackner. Blackner homered and teammates Kurt Marchant and Steve Leydsman tripled and doubled respectively. Lion's defeated Arctic Circle 84 with J. Smith and K. Hinton sharing mound duties. Doubles were hit by K. Thompson, J. Wheeler (2) and Hinton. R. Pete and J. Anderson threw for Arctic Circle and V. Pete and Williams got two baggers. Rolling Rubber got their second win in a close 11-10 victory over Century 21. G. Clark, Patterson, Fullmer, Jensen and Barrick all doubled for the winners while Centurv 21's scoring was led by a home run by Hatchet and doubles by Beatty and Matheson. Town & Country picked up an 11-5 win over Arctic Circle. T & C was led by G. Slack's home run and M. Bleaks double. Scoring for Arctic Circle came with the help of a home run by V. Pete, a triple by Schexsnayder and a double by D. Evans. Lion's 11-0 victory over Farm Bureau gave Ryan Brown and Kyle Hinton the pitching victory in spite of a double by Wilcox of Farm Bureau. .Wilcox and Adair shared mound duties for Farm Bureau. Tink's defeated Century Cen-tury 21 13-2 as Peterson went the distance on the mound, and Messer led the hitting with three doubles. Stein homered for Century 21. The Elks walloped Town and Country 23-3, aided by doubles by Jensen and Mitchell. Ron's squeaked by Tink's 3-2 in a seventh-inning seventh-inning extra-inning affair. af-fair. Gilbert and Jones were the winning pitchers wint Lunt and Bryan . Hofheins sharing mound duties for Tink's. B. Watson and Ryan Whittikiend got doubles for Ron's, and Lunt led Tink's hitting with two doubles. Garden Park's first victory came by an 8-5 score over Farm Bureau as Blackburn, Blackner and Marchant each doubled. Wilcox did the same for Farm Bureau. American League Ken Bettridge picked up two big wins as they defeated 7-Up 24-11 and Boyer's 17-2. In the first game B. Barton homered and doubled and was backed up by a double by Clay Tom. Against Boyers Tom tripled and doubled, S. Slack and Danny Knight tripled and Del Rich and Barton doubled. Kiwanis picked up a 11-7 win over Boyers with Slack and Heap on the mound. Kurt Stapley hit a two-bagger for Kiwanis. It was 7-11 11 and Carter Brothers 10 in a close encounter. The winners were helped on their way with Kevin Schramm's home run, while Gile's double led the hitting for Carter Brothers. Rotary came from behind to defeat Spillsbury 10-9 as Travis Blake went the distance for the winners. Lee Roundy doubled for the winners while Spillsbury's scoring was led by Scott Garrett's home-run and double, two doubles by Eric Garrett and a double by Gardner. Coleman's 16-3 victory over Carter Brothers came with Kurt Roundy on the mound. Roundy and teammate Lance Taylor both put the ball out of the park for home runs while Bobby Ren-fort, Ren-fort, Taylor and B. Dunaway all got doubles. Bonzo doubled for Carter Brothers. It was a 15-6 victory for Realty World as they met Kiwanis. |
